Just out of curiosity, has there ever been anything done for those writers on old TV shows that never got residuals?

The writers on old shows got residuals for syndicated re-runs - which, at the time, was the only thing anyone ever thought the old TV shows would be used for.

In part that's what this strike is about - making sure that if the studios make money on releasing something in a new technology, then the original creators of that something will also get paid. It's only fair.

The way the video made it sound, those writers on old shows got nothing beyond what they were originally paid. Another question since I find this stuff pretty interesting. When a writer dies, does their family still get residuals from their work?

I'm with the writers P!! Without you guys we wouldn't have gems like The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes, Lost and Dexter (my favorite shows). :rock

"The Office" is one of the latest in a growing list of TV Shows to shut down production as a result of the Strike. Steve Carell called in to report "He was suffering from a case of enlarged balls".

I was reading that Jon Stewart is paying the writers of The Daily Show and the Colbert Report for 2 weeks out of his own pocket. I thought that was a pretty cool thing to do.

Kind of funny that these supposed "funny" guys can't write their own stuff and have to go into reruns instead.

Exactly. This strike shows just how helpless a lot of these talk show hosts are without writers. I mean, Leno and Letterman aren't talented enough to write their own monologues, even for just a little while? Wow.

If thats the caset must be kinda embarrassing for these guys. Or is it widley know that they do none of their own work?

It's pretty well known that they lean on staffs of writers for their material. Leno has even referenced it at times. Last week, one of his jokes fell flat and he surmised that the writer's strike must have started early (of course, that line was probably written by a writer as well). :lol

I think that if all of the camera operators or sound men went on strike, we would be in the same situation. Making films and TV shows is a team effort and when one piece of the puzzle removes itself then that impacts everyone else. You can't move forward without a script, actors, directors, a crew, etc. If the writers get their demands as a result of this strike then I would imagine that there will be more strikes to come throughout the industry.
