I support the writers... I know that if I were in their position I would want a more fair deal. For artists, it's feast or famine a lot of the time. And to get such a small cut while the market grows and changes is nuts.

These guys bust their humps to get us fantastic television and films, they deserve more respect than that. :rock

Guys like Leno and Conan COULD write their own material - they were doing stand up on their own, let's remember. However, they didn't have to write new material for five new shows a week all by themselves. That would be more than a little overwhelming.

On top of it, if they tried doing something like that, it would be a pretty bad slap in the face to their team of writers, and guys like Leno and Conan know how critical those folks are. They certainly wouldn't do something that disrespectful to them.

This is true...

And to all you people who are saying that Leno, Letterman and the rest should just write their own monologues...

They would be crossing their own picket lines! They are all credited as writers on their own shows. THEY BELONG TO THE UNION!!!!

Right on, jj. :D

This strike has the possibility to cripple the industry, not for good of course, but short term. I heard on the news that that last time in the 80s it cost millions to recover and in lost revenue. Heroes has an alternative season ender but they are one of the few shows that do, most shows will end awkwardly

Not to mention slapping them in the face. If Leno wrote all of his own monologues during this strike he'd essentially show people that they aren't needed henceforth putting their jobs at risk if not outright eliminating them. A move like that would basically not only cross the line but turn around and flip off those whom are striking.

The last time we faced a writers strike, the networks invented reality TV. Remember "Thats Incredable".

MY GOD!!!! Don't we have enough of that Reality crap now.

I shudder to think what we'll be seeing in the months to come.

Don't you guys watch the emmy's? They listed all the writers and some of the late night shows have upwards of 10-15 writers. It's not just the monologues, but all the skits, stunts, etc.

In 1988 the writers strike did cripple the industry - I know people that never recovered from it. Agent friends that ended up working in bookstores, etc.

As for other unions - IATSE which is the stage hands, lighting grips, cameramen, etc. is a very powerful union. If they went on strike it would shut down the industry as well. Same with SAG.

It was the 1988 strike that begat the reality format - COPS and America's Most Wanted were just the first of it.

I predict huge ratings for quality shows such as "Mythbusters", "Dirty Jobs", etc.

This era's reality show isn't free of this either. Shows like Survivor, Real World even Dancing with the Stars all employ writers. Survivor's writers and Real World's writers all shape a character and give the reality a bit of a plot or substance shows like Dancing with the Stars for example keep the hosts on their toes, do you think they know all the moves and the names? Lol. While shows like Survivor, etc have the current season in the can, they are actively working on the next and a writer's strike in a long distance kind of thing would make those shows null and void.

Trust me they would continue these type shows and ad lib everything. As far as story arcs for shows like "Survivor" they would leave that to the creators and editors. These type of shows will proliferate!

Not anymore, Seth Myers, head Writer on SNL said on the picket line that the show has gone Dark.

Wait a minute. Let me get this straight. SNL has writers? It hasn't been funny in years!

Pjam...

Clear this up for me, News writers are in some union, obviously not WGA.

What Union are they in?

I believe they are part of the NWU (National Writers Union) Journalists, etc.

"The National Writers Union is the trade union for freelance and contract writers: journalists, book authors, business and technical writers, web content providers, and poets."
