I think that if all of the camera operators or sound men went on strike, we would be in the same situation. Making films and TV shows is a team effort and when one piece of the puzzle removes itself then that impacts everyone else. You can't move forward without a script, actors, directors, a crew, etc. If the writers get their demands as a result of this strike then I would imagine that there will be more strikes to come throughout the industry.

Not necessarily. The WGA carries a lot more weight in the industry than most of the other unions.

It's pretty well known that they lean on staffs of writers for their material. Leno has even referenced it at times. Last week, one of his jokes fell flat and he surmised that the writer's strike must have started early (of course, that line was probably written by a writer as well). :lol

Thats crazy. So all they are really good for is comic timing, just know when to say what.

Thats weak.

Pretty much. And that also explains why a lot of writers have been frustrated. They do most of the heavy-lifting behind the scenes but get little (if any) of the credit.

The main exception to this are many network series and sitcoms. In most cases, the writers are golden... oft times also gaining some ownership and producing status.

The way the video made it sound, those writers on old shows got nothing beyond what they were originally paid. Another question since I find this stuff pretty interesting. When a writer dies, does their family still get residuals from their work?

I believe generally the family gets residuals from work up to 75 years after the death of the originator... So for example Lon Chaney's family got residuals until 2005.

I believe this is generally how it works. :monkey1

All late-night talk shows have writers. Even the king of late-night, Johnny Carson, had writers. And it's not just one, it's a team of writers. You try writing a funny opening monolog for 5 shows a week.

Good luck to them. I hope they get what they want.

I'm with the writers P!! Without you guys we wouldn't have gems like The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes, Lost and Dexter (my favorite shows). :rock

Thanks Bro, we need all the support we can get. The Producers (AMPTP) are waging a PR war against us. Their duplicitous tactics are now being exposed on the internet, etc so it's starting to backfire. :D

It is these tactics that is unifying WGA even more and causing many supporters to shut TV production down.

Guys like Leno and Conan COULD write their own material - they were doing stand up on their own, let's remember. However, they didn't have to write new material for five new shows a week all by themselves. That would be more than a little overwhelming.

On top of it, if they tried doing something like that, it would be a pretty bad slap in the face to their team of writers, and guys like Leno and Conan know how critical those folks are. They certainly wouldn't do something that disrespectful to them.

Considering that Vince McMahon would probably go nuclear if the wrestlers themselves ever fully unionized I very much doubt he hires any guild writers. :lol

I am pretty sure his daughter is the main writer.
