Erech Overaker
Freaked Out
Wow, this thread is nuts. Glad I listened to my spider-sense tingling when I saw these threads for that site here and at OSW. Hope anyone out money gets it back, but I can totally see the appeal in the scam itself. The growth and money spent on this hobby in the last 2 years or so has become insane, with collectors willing to spend almost any amount to get Wolverine and Batman dolls etc. Not saying anyone deserved to be scammed, but I can certainly see the fertile ground a scammer would when undertaking this.
Also as for the theory of why a scientist would want to get involved, don't be that naive to think they wouldn't. If the numbers adding are true, that's a decent haul that anyone with low morals would be interested in. And scientists make a decent to moderate income, they're not millionaires by any means. Sure the scammer may be using an alias, or maybe did steal that identity, but it's also just as likely the guy is in involved too since at this point there seems to be no evidence he isn't.
Hopefully this experience has taught some people a very valuable lesson, and reinforced it to those of us who already knew it - C.Y.A. - Cover Your A$$ when it comes to sending money online.
Good luck everyone.
