Now I can envision what a modern Phantom would like.

Looks alot like the comic imo. I think the armour is for defense and so he can levitate himself and so it resembles the ripped torse he has in the comics

Aka 89 Batman :lol

I just think armored up was the wrong way to go. I would have gone with a more regal look. But I'm not totally against this. With Helmet on it's undoubtedly Magneto, and I'd buy a figure of it. :panic:

Again, why does a character that can stop thousands of bullets, need body armor?

It'd be like giving Superman body armor on his suit. It just doesn't make any sense.

I thught you didn't care abut reason why? You said they don't need to explain characters changing costumes each movie

I don't. You're the one that's giving reasons to why he'd need it.

I'm just saying, why does a character that can stop knives, bullets, etc. need that cliched tactical armor that all these modern comic book/superhero movie designs seem to have?

A look more like Darth Vader (but not black of course) would have been better in my opinion. Just give him that shoulder armor like in the comics.

Singer can direct for sure but... Why? Why he's given the freedom in design department? WHYYYY???

Accuracy comparison

Pros:
Neck and chest collar design close to comic costume
Cape connects to the above
Armour used to replicate muscular look of torso
Helmet has comic crest and shape

Negs:
No giant diaper
Colours of costume and helmet aren't as red or bright as comic
Armour instead of shredded torso visible through costume

It's not horrible and if the movie is somehow spectacular (which I doubt given Singer's track record) then it will even be endearing on account of that but it is just so uninspired.

"Tactical" was awesome in 2005 but I really hate the notion that all superheroes/vigilantes have uniforms designed by Lucius Fox regardless of the cinematic universe. Thank God that junk hasn't crept into the Marvel Studios films (Iron Man doesn't count obviously.)
