I find the spontaneous surge in X-Men hate fascinating, as we have had 4 great movies, 1 ok movie, and 1 not so good movie. That's a pretty good record for me. It seems that hating the X-Men franchise has become quite popular with certain people only very recently. We started off well, as X1 and X2 were excellent movies (X2 being one of the Top 5 CBM's IMO). Sure X3 (which I really like) and XO:W weren't 100% what we were looking for, but since then we've had two great movies in X:FC and The Wolverine, both of which are really enjoyable movies to watch. The X-hate bandwagon seems to have come from nowehere?
I'm not sure if you were referring to my comment, but I said disappointed, not hate . I'm too big of an X-fan to hate these... except Origins; hell I'm one of the few in existence who even likes LS. Of course X2 is their crown jewel. But with the level of quality in CBM that we're seeing in the last 6 years, it's hard for me to not wish they were MUCH better.
Like Seph Stampede said, "they didn't age well", and that's just the truth. The X & Spidey movies made a big splash when they were first released because it was all what fans have been waiting years for, but now we have so much to compare them to. They broke new ground, paved the way but quickly became a stepping stone (Blade doesn't count as the first to break ground because R rated movies with that kind of content are aimed at a totally different audience). From day one I hated the inconsistencies, inaccuracies with the source material, total lack of continuity, the butchering of Rouge and all of the other common complaints; but now I even lost appreciation for certain parts of the script where it was stuff that didn't bother me years ago. There is a fair amount of cheesy delivery where the dialogue sounds just like it does in the X-Men Legends games.
Marvel Studios really took a look at what the X-movies did wrong, what The Dark Knight trilogy did right, and made great decisions based on all of that. TDK movies proved that CBM's don't have to be candy coated. I feel Marvel Studios pushed the delivery to the limits to where it is a perfect balance that appeals to the wide audience it’s targeting. All little kids go wild for it all and toys are selling like mad, and the older portion of the target market can be satisfied with the maturity level of the dialogue, story line and overall delivery.
The real reason why the X-movies didn't get rebooted is Jackman IMO. He's universally deemed as this perfect Wolverine and he became the face of the franchise. That's why they keep trudging forward with him at the forefront instead of doing what was done with Spidey, and starting with a clean slate after 3-4 movies. Personally I like Jackman's Wolverine but I don't feel like he was absolutely born for the role as RDJ is for Stark and Hemsworth is for Thor.
