Re: Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past
I partially disagree, Shadow. Yes, a Charles and Magneto only movie would be fantastic. And yes, any time they were offscreen in XM:FC, the movie suffered. But that's the fault of the screenwriter and to some extent the director in that the other characters were so dull and uninteresting.
However, I think a true ensemble movie can and does work. It worked for the Avengers. It worked for Serenity. It worked for the Ocean's 11 movies. It worked for X:1 and X:2, etc. You just need to write well-rounded characters and their subplots can be just as interesting as Charles and Mags.
And yeah, I guess they can replace the Kitty character for anyone else, but it would be terrible if they did. I LOVED the Kitty character when I was growing up. I was pretty much IN love with the character. And it's a shame that the movies haven't featured her well yet.
As far as replacing her with Charles in the time travel--I think it needs to be someone young in the present. The point of the plot was that it was set so far in the future, only a few mutants were still around, including Rachel, the child of present day mutants. Charles (and Magneto? Don't remember offhand) were long gone by that time. It also worked great in the comic because Kitty was such a young, inexperienced girl and to see her grown up to a mature, confident, smart and capable woman was very satisfying--seeing that her character could develop in that way. It also worked like those body switch movies in that the mature Kitty inhabits the child Kitty's body and it was strange for everyone else to see that jarring character change.
