Personally even if not better I'm glad xm took a proactive stance and identified the potential problem and has attempted to address it

... Or sacrifice the translucent material and avoid the leaning problem altogether. XM can even add rods to the Phoenix.

XM can even add rods to the Phoenix.

They already did that:

Update on Jean Grey (phoenix ) production.
We make sure very pcs have a square metal rode cast into the right leg, from top to bottom...to prevent bending after long periods of display.

I'm talking about the bird. XM is worried about the bird leaning because the translucent material is not rigid, so it has to be straighten up, hence running into Jean's hair. To whole redesign is due to the bird leaning.

As I said on SF, we need more pics from more angles. Real pics, not these shoddy ones they pass off to us. As it stands, the original head is still miles ahead as being the best. The angry head now has an overly short forehead with the way they positioned the hair, not to mention the beady eyes (which they've noted and are addressing at least). Lastly, the new shiny green sucks. I hate it compared to the matte green of the pre-order. Why change that?? They've made some silly, questionable changes on this piece from PO to now so it's a little befuddling.

More pics XM....

xm has not failed to deliver yet so I remain hopeful.

having said that I would much rather have the old bird if it meant I got to keep the original hair.

XM stated very specifically it is the change from the original bird to the TRANSLUCENT bird, the translucent bird not being as rigid as the original bird that leaning was an issue. The original bird didn't have this problem.

They had to make the translucent bird straighter to fix the Lea inning issue, and as a result had to alter the hair because the translucent bird stood to close.

I was a fan of the original bird anyway, maybe I'm in the minority, but changing to a version of the bird a could do without and that resulting in other changes like the calm head hair not looking as good leaves me a bit down on this piece. Not a bad statue, but not as good as it once was.

On both heads though, the hairlines need to be raised. She has a squished in forehead compared to some of the older versions we've seen.

Sideshow probably looks at all the back and forth on these XM statues and how fans can bring about changes and are probably just like, "see, that's why we don't do all that" lol.

*EDIT
Looking over their Facebook, I don't see where XM says the lean issue was due to the material being less rigid, but that's what was posted by somebody on the other forum. On their Facebook it says the leaning issue was present with the ORIGINAL bird, so that being case, even if the bird material wasn't changed it'd still have to be adjusted to stand up more, and therefore the hair still would've had to change.

This created an issue with the original hair 'clashing' with the bird so we had to redo the hair sculpt to flow upwards to avoid collision with the bird.

It's crystal clear why the changes were made.

Yep the changes make perfect sense from an engineering and design point of view. However there are a lot of people who would sacrifice the translucent lean pron Phoenix for the original if they got the original head sculpt. XM is being super respectful and up front about the need for the changes, but tis was bound to happen eventually with changes happening to pieces after the PO. They were going to make changes that a large number of people weren't going to like. Unfortunately it happens to be on their most anticipated piece since Magneto. The blow back on this one is going to be pretty nasty if it isn't changed back

I really dont get the rage on the XM FB, people starting to doubt there skills i mean if they say its not possible to push jean more away from the bird then its not possible I rather have the hair tweaked a bit then a leaning body, and I know for a fact that XM mags had a custom head made and who knows Phoenix can get that also with the boring I mean pose hair with no airflow that makes no sense with a burning hell bird behind you! Do you have problems keeping your hair in Great style in bad weather Buy ultra hair gel just like jean grey it wont move one bit xD

There will always be room for controversy when POs are put up before a statue is finalized. I know peeps are used to the way SSC does business but XM operates differently. Hell, most of us outside XM's territory have to try and PO a statue as soon as the concept art is revealed. Even then, there's no guarantees we'll be able to secure the piece. Peeps that can't order directly from XM have no choice but to roll the dice as early as possible and hope for the best. Besides, even SSC has the dreaded 'prototype is subject to change' label on all of their POs. Changes have to be made sometimes. All that we can ask for is that we can get our money back if we're not happy. I'm sure that won't be a problem for anyone who's interested in canceling an XM PO.

Exactly! We all made a choice to PO early. We all knew the risk.

I'm surprised by some of the posters on FB ...and on SF. This time around there are some "pushy" (lack of a better word) collectors. They're making it sound like this is the most horrible statue ever ...just because of the hair. We just need better pics of the portraits when XM is done with paint tweaks. I don't know why, but I'm confident they'll look great.

I'm not raging but I have to say that the hair flipping up on the calm portrait is really really forced looking and bazaar. The only way I ever see someone's hair looking like that naturally is if they are floating in a pool with their head above water. I would rather the hair just be short and stay down in the back if contact with the bird is a problem instead of on actually having it unnaturally angle up just to keep it at the same length.

The way I see it, there is up draft as the phoenix bird emerges from the sentinel's chest. We all know the phoenix bird is much bigger than what's on the statue. That leaves me to believe that the phoenix bird is just forming shooting upwards. That causes an up draft pushing Jean's hair up like that on the statue. It just means Jean is powering up made more dramatic with emergence of the fiery phoenix bird.

:goodpost:
Its not even horrible, its just different and like i said its a way more realistic look, its not possible that your hair is calm with an inferno behind ya.
And if we go back to the eyes, yes there are even comments about the bigger eyes on the calm face on FB, i think they look Great dont change it I have BW and dont get me wrong but i liked the old bigger eyes a bit more on that one but it still looks Great.

With regards to the "refund if you're not satisfied", I must apologize on behalf of my brethens that it wasn't well phrased and gave the impression "If you ain't happy, just return it." Remember, the boys skipped education in their younger days to go into the glory of inhaling toxic gas and painting kits so their phrasing may be misconstrued.

What we are REALLY saying is "We can see that you're clearly upset with the posts and frustrated feedback . We understand fully if you wish to ask for a refund and will honor it regardless of our non-refundable deposit policy."

It's funny that ultimately the end statement is the same but when put across differently, gives a very different impression. But point noted we will improve on our communication skills! Hee ya! Any distressed caused is unintended and I apologize...

Of course it's possible for your hair to remain calm in that situation. You're freaking Phoenix and can control almost anything you want with your mind. If Jean wants calm pretty hair with him for a raging inferno behind her then gosh darn it Jean will have nice pretty hair.

Besides, the hair was floating before. It wasn't laying flat like nothing was happening. This is quite clearly a design compromise and there can be zero question about it as that's exactly what XM said it was.

I'm not going to kick up a huge fuss or threaten to cancel my PO. It's not a deal breaker for me but when I look at it all I can see is a compromise, not original intent of conceptual design. It happens. I would do it differently but I'm not a statue designer.

Compromise is a good word here SurlyJ. It's a definite compromise by XM. I only wished they didn't do rush jobs on these things for shows as that's what is creating this whole fiasco in the first place with a piece that isn't painted/designed up to their standards.
