I finally ordered the Alien Blu Ray set from Amazon.Uk for $38 shipped. It was on sale a few days ago, and with cheap shipping I couldn't resist anymore. Can't wait for it to arrive so I can watch the first two.

That price is insane! It's like $72 at amazon.com. Is it the exact same set? Is it region-free?

Yes, the only difference is the packaging. The US version comes in a kinda digibook design, with the discs housed in thick cardboard pages and in a slipbox while the UK comes in a digipack like the Quadrilogy DVD.

I wonder what packaging is considered better.

So, just to confirm, it's Region-Free?

I prefer the US version. It looks better and is easier to use then the UK version. You gotta fold it out a bunch of times to get Disc 1 on Alien. But, if you don't really care about the packaging, the UK version is a steal.

And yes, it's Region Free :)

I'm with you on the pain of the fold-out thing... i hated the fold-out packaging of the DVD quadrilogy. With 9 DVDs, to get the last disc in the set, I had to walk to the other end of my living room!

Have you heard any complaints about how the discs are housed in the US set?

I'm really on the fence here. Packaging is important to the overall package, but is it really worth half the price of the set? A difficult question to answer for an obsessive collector! :lol

I was thinking of picking up this differently packaged set, since I'm such an Alien nut. I definitely don't like flipping the packaging out every time, like in my LOTR EE DVD sets. Only had the U.S. version of the Alien blu set for a few months, and it seems like the outer box packaging is bowing out a bit, and it bothers me. I may just have to lay this set on its side to prevent further bowing out. And the new set would not cure that anyway...

One other thing is, I don't like sliding the discs in and out of the cardboard because won't that get them scratched up at some point? Even with the smallest of debris getting in there. I live in the desert and we have plenty of dust, so...

Already watched Alien on blu about 7 times, Aliens about 5, and A3 maybe three times...

The only complaint i've heard is that you have to slide the discs in but it's not that bad imo.

:lol Well, i would rather pay more and have the better packaging then save money.

I have the UK version and it was a steal. I got it for $30 or so shipped back around x-mas.

It was awesome. Packaging does not warrant all the extra cash.

Here's a link to the deal on fatwallet -

Someone mentioned that generally the bonus discs are non-HD, so you would miss out on the 2 bonus discs in the set most likely.

Still a heck of a steal.

Also check out the other sets she listed in that link. Some very good deals!!! :panic:

So wait, 2 discs are DVD instead of Blu-ray, and won't play on Region 1 players?? Anders and everyone else, help please??

I havnt heard that 2 of the discs are DVD. But i just read that they have changed the packaging. It's not in a digipack anymore, now it's a Amaray case in a slipbox.

It's not that the discs are DVD vs BD (as they are all BD), but the format of the extras (PAL vs NTSC).

Makes me wonder that if they are truly shipping the amaray cases now, it may be the NTSC version which will be good for NA.

Man, I ordered the X-Men Trilogy and Red from Amazon on the 23rd and it still hasn't shipped out. Sucky! I want my movies so I can watch em, and look at how pretty they are.
