AOTC UHD Review:

Similar to its predecessor, Episode II arrives to Ultra HD with a complicated history on home video. As the first production to be shot entirely on digital film using Sony's CineAlta HDW-F900 camera, the elements, unfortunately, come with some inherent limitations that don't translate well to UHD, putting the end result on par with The Phantom Menace. The camera's resolution maxes out at 1080p HD and was later mastered to a 2K digital intermediate, which was reportedly uprezzed to a new 4K DI and used for this strong but nonetheless disappointing HEVC H.265 encode.

Due to those aforementioned limitations, the 2160p upscaled transfer shows little to almost no improvement in overall definition while ruined by several instances of very mild aliasing along the sharpest edges, the blatant application of DNR and a fair amount of posterization in many spots. To be fair, a couple scenes are a step-up over the Blu-ray, like those on Naboo, but the differences are so minimal that it's barely worth noting, especially given that a majority of the visuals were done in subpar CGI and visual effects that haven't aged well.

Other issues native to the digital cameras is a source fixed to 8-bit color depth, which simply means it is not up to the demands and further adds to a less-than-satisfying 4K video. Granted, the contrast and brightness enjoy a slight upgrade with a tad silkier blacks and more radiant whites, but the small boost of the latter also creates some distracting hot spots and blooming that frequently washes aways the finer details. Specular highlights enjoy a brighter, crisper pop, especially around metallic reflective surfaces, but it's a rather minimal jump.

Compared to its HD SDR counterpart, the HDR10 presentation is also sadly hindered by the limited color gamut, so ultimately, the overall palette doesn't gain much other than primaries seeming slightly fuller and reds looking a tad deeper. To be sure, flesh tones are better rendered here, but the rest of the hues remain relatively the same as the HD version.

I bought the best buy exclusive box set because the outer packaging showcasing the death star really displays well and is nicely made and looks clean. However, the glue stain, disk holders, and artwork inside the book itself are pretty underwhelming and leave much to be desired to say the least.. Another reason i bought the set is i really didnt like the cover art on the individual packaging (although i prefer the individual cases). I did however have some of my disks come with tiny marks or blemishes on them which bugs me (as long as they play im cool though). Its possible im being hyper sensitive and i just dont notice the same blemishes on disks that come in the safer standard packaging. I assume they will release a steelbook set at some point, and when they do ill buy that. I just wish they did a set of steel books to begin with or the slip covers of the individual releases were more appealing to me. And whats the deal with solo it doesnt even match the other releases? I am still pretty shocked we didnt get a concurrent set of steelbooks, like we did with all the marvel and disney movie releases.

That will be two more releases down the road...

Solo and The Last Jedi will be repackaged later this year to match the other covers. I think late summer. Disney is probably letting the original versions sell down first. You can always print out other covers for each movie if you like. A lot of the custom covers are poster art for the movies.

For anyone at all on the fence about upgrading their MCU collection to 4K this is the time to do it because soon enough these will no longer be available not at these prices:

BB has:

IM1-2-3-CM steelbooks for $10 each with FREE SHIPPING!

Cap TFA-CW $15!

Everything else $20.

Damn I paid triple that for my IM1 sb lol

But $10 with free shipping they have to be losing money, no. That is truly insane.

Yes! Thanks for the heads up!

Just ordered IM1/TWS/CW/GotG. :rock

I'm so over Disney+ 4K after seeing the difference between their digital and physical SW releases, lol.

Now I have the full Cap trilogy, IM1, GotG, Thor 3, SMH, and IW/EG all in 4K. :yess:

Hmmmm I don't agree... Now I don't know AOTC like the back of my hand but the 4K offered more depth and a more natural filmlike appearance.. It was nothing compared to ROTS but it was a solid transfer IMO.. Having said this I have a 65 inch Vizio P series... So its not an overly large screen where details may not be as apparent. I could tell the difference in TROS though.. I even went back and put in the old Blu ray for that one and it looks better for sure. I didn't do the same with AOTC. Film is not good enough for me to really care that much :)

Well I watched it for the first time since December (I didn?t buy the early digital release I never do).

Khev.......

My inner SW hit me like a locomotive I was cheering and crying what a complete turnaround for me!

A complete turnaround for me.

The critics got it wrong so very wrong.

All the critical moments were a joy to experience.

The freaking space battle or lack there of did not bother me this time because I was so deep into the journey plus I got onboard with what they were going with.

I loved it that just like the shield had to be taken down on Endor in ROTJ so did the Final Order antennae.

Lando was so awesome!

The parts I had already loved I loved even more!

You know the fans who are upset for not getting Duel of the Fates Kylo are mistaken THEY DID GET PRIME KYLO in all of his ferociousness full of win when he conquered Rey.

JJ actually gave us the best of both scripts, super prime Kylo AND a proper send off for Han, Leia, Luke while honoring Kylo saving the Skywalker name, he climbed out of the pit not unlike the one he had thrown his father into!

Damn General Pryde actually got a bent knee audience with the freaking emperor that **** was for Vader only!

I loved Pryde eyes showing the reflection of the emperor as a manifestation of the hypnotic haze the sith have on regular people.

I loved it that Kylo disappeared into the force true respect for Vaders sacrifice he would get to finally see and experience Anakin.

I loved it that Palpatine wanted what ObiWan told Vader in ANH that if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can imagine but that the dyad made his arrogance come thru again.

When Rey was connected to the force did you see all the quick shadows flashing on her face as if she was taking on a massive influx of spirits flowing thru her.

I loved it that Palpatine went back to humiliating Rey as a nobody trying to destroy her confidence.

Emperor death was not weak for me this time out the 2 sabers upholding the dyad was perfection!

I found it quite unique that the macguffin kept changing from the dagger, her past and then into her healing reveal.

Dude my eyes revived my soul and flushed out all of that cynicism poison.

This cast is very much part of the family now.

They are part of the family now!

They are part of the family now!

lol

I am smiling right now.

Did I miss this reaction in the official TROS thread?

I didn't know you came around to the film this much.. I thought you still liked it but still had all the same issues.. Nice to have you here fully on the light side :)

Lord Khev swayed young JYE to the darkside. There were no pink tacos and no booze to keep JYE unbiased and he turned. Somewhere close Lord Khev is laughing as darkside pupil gains strength in the fight to turning more and pore people to the darkside.

"Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Khev the wise? I thought not. It's not a story the PT apologists would tell you. It's an OT legend. Darth Khev was a Dark Lord of the OT, so powerful and so wise he could use Lucas' own original story notes to influence the movies to create canon... He had such a knowledge of behind the scenes lore that he could even keep sequels he cared about from dying."

lol
