I dont think it was meant to be a mind boggling twist (we already knew he hallucinated Becca) but it was still a cool plot device nonetheless.
It was made obvious to the viewer. It was only a revelation for Butcher.
Which is kinda naff writing. It is set up as an opportunity to surprise the audience but they either failed to make it a surprise or missed the opportunity to try.

Not really. Hardly the first piece of media to have a “mystery” where the audience are in the know but the characters are not.

It's not great but it's not terrible. If you're familiar with the video game series Postal, it's kind of in that vein of feel. It's crude and gratuitous and feels like it was written by an edgy teen. It doesn't build on anything or have a deeper meaning, it's all surface level and on the nose gore, sex, and racism.
