Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Oh I don't think it will be terrible. Far from it. It's certainly not going to be another 'Pond' thats for sure.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Ok, that review rests a lot of fears. Would be nice if they could do an alternate sculpt sometime in the future with his classic grin

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Agreed, the 4th Doctor is a perfect candidate for an accessory pack!

Might be cool to do a set with a smiling Doctor head, K9, conopic jar prop(s) and maybe even the computer board from Pyramids of Mars.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I'm sure folks will love him, I still have 'issues' though. :)

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I have it on order, yes.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Michael's review seals it. If mine looks like that, I'm over the moon!

Can't wait to get mine, be great if its this week.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I hate to be that guy, but even though I've bought it, I still think the likeness is weak, and the expression poorly chosen. I had hopes that in-hand it would change my mind, that maybe the early pics were a touch misleading, but in all honesty those hopes have pretty much faded away now with these higher quality pics being shown. I'm a little amazed at the level of praise it's getting to be honest, but to each their own, as they say.

I mean don't get me wrong, everything else looks good and really well done, despite some odd colour choices. But for me, likeness is everything, and here, honestly, I don't see a whole lot of Tom Baker in this sculpt at all. Looks more like John Culshaw pretending to be Tom Baker to me, or a rough approximation of Baker, at best...

I'm genuinely happy for everyone that is satisfied with this one, but for me, personally I think I'm bound to be rather disappointed when this arrives, unfortunately. Not the end of the world, but I'd be lying if I said I felt comfortable with the amount I paid in order to get something that is now likely to remain in the box after it arrives.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

If that is representative of what is coming off the production line, the paintwork is certainly better than 11. It has some shading and depth and the grey wash looks well contained. The lip colour is also more realistic and they have also tamed the guyliner a lot. Don't like all those loose threads on the coat, though, or the obvious stitching. And what is up with the coat cuffs? The fabric on the trousers is also too thick. You'd have to walk like a Cyberman with those on. And they would itch. It looks better than I thought it would, but then I'm not buying it so don't have a vested interest in this being perfect.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I think it looks like Tom Baker and no one else. Some of the thing that I didn't love about the figure I've come to grips with over the last year or so since we first saw it.

Yes, the expression was a bit odd a choice, to me, the first time I saw it. I think they were influenced by:

And a bit:

I don't think it's bad though. It still seems very 4th Doctor-ish, just not an aspect you see of him a TON. Similarly, the way his hat is on his head isn't really how I think of Tom Baker's Doctor in my head. I hope if we get more heads for him (which, frankly, I think are essential) then I'd like to see (in addition the often-stated smiling face) a more "determined" expression as well, with a hair and hat sculpt where the hat sat lower on his head:

For me, a lot of these things are choices that were made in the design. I'm not sure they were right or wrong, just a direction they went. And, in the end, I like it even if my exact preference might be elsewhere. :)

As for the rest, I think the stitching looks fine and so do the fabric choices. I do think it'd be nice if the pants "laid" a bit better, but I was thinking with some flexing and manipulation you could probably get these pants to look a bit more loose and less stiff.

For those not happy with the colours of the scarf, I would give it a cold tea bath. That would dull down some of those pastels and grunge it up a bit.

Rest assured your not just 'that guy' I find myself agreeing with most of what you've said especially regarding the sculpt, if you compare it to the prototype it's just not quite the same the face has been pinched/slimed however you want to discribe it.

The mouth/chin are 'shorter' than they should be which throws the likeness of, the lines on the face which give a sculpt it's real character seem undefined or washed out this could be down to the sculpt itself or the paint apps but the outcome is a less lifelike look.

I know this might seem nit-picking but again at this price point you do expect the end product to be a notch above this in the sculpting department. If this is the same sculpt as the prototype (which it probably is) then it would point to the manufacturing process still not bieng right.

I have bought this figure and will be displaying him and anyone seeing him will know who he is without a doubt, and I do think the costume, packaging and accesories all look very good, it's just that had the sculpt/paint apps been on a par with the prototype it just would have been so much better.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I'd liked the prototype sculpt. Reminded me in parts of my sculptor friends version he did years ago, which imo has Tom's serious face down to a T, but doesn't have a 'bug eyed' look which can make him look 'odd' and unnatural when over done.

This. :)

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

There was shot in that video review where the head looked almost identical to Tom in the opening credits.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Looks great, I'm pleased for everyone who has this on order. I'm holding out for a grinning face sculpt, but if I could afford it I would buy this too - it's got that whole Weetabix card 1976 vibe to it.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I know what they were going for, but in my own personal view I just don't think they achieved it. There's a certain 'look' that Tom has, which comes through no matter what expression or emotion he has at any given time, and it is that 'look' that the figure is just completely lacking, for me at least.

As I said, happy for all those that are happy though.
