I don't understand why 108 years is such a big deal. If it was the same players trying to win for 108 years then that would be something amazing.

I mean aren't there teams that have never won this series thing?

To be honest, there's a lot I don't understand about this sport ball game.

I can understand what you mean.

For instance, if say you have a team with a core group of current players who have been together as a group for several seasons and have been to the playoffs together yet fell just short each time, I would actually say they're more "deserving" (of course they have to prove they are through their play) and due for a title win vs. say a team whose players were all just bought with the intention of winning a quick championship right now. The droughts of each franchise in that case don't really mean anything because those current players on each team weren't there for the entire 108 years (or however long it is for any particular team). So if the team with the core group of players who have been together for awhile and fell just short each season of a title win is playing a team full of players who haven't been together very long but yet their franchise has had a longer title drought than the other team, I'd still say the team of the group of players who have been together for awhile yet just fell short each season is more "deserving" than the team in the title drought. I use the term "deserving" loosely though because obviously in sports, the team that's more "deserving" is the one that outplays the other team.

If that makes sense.

Thanks for that! I thought I was crazy for thinking this is not as big a deal as everyone else believes it is.

I think you missed the point. The players are playing for a city -- in this case Chicago. Chicago's baseball team hasn't won for 108 years, so its a big thing to bring back the trophy to Chicago after so long.

Teams represent cities.... not players.

I see people literally crying because Harrison Ford came back as Han Solo after just 30 some odd years. Give Chicago a break.

Well that makes sense too. I hadn't considered that. Sports fandom has always been something I struggle to fully understand.

No, I understand that as well.

I have a family member who in his late 80's is one of the biggest Chicago Cubs fans there are, so I'm glad they won because of that. I can also relate being a staunch LA Kings fan, so it was a big thing to see them win at least one Cup in 2012 after several years of disappointment. Never thought I'd see the day where they'd win just one, then they won it again two seasons later.

And now I have to google this
I'll save you the trouble. The Toronto Blue Jays are a Canada based team and are usually very competitive. Beyond that players from all over the world play MLB baseball.

And just to add to the conversation that was had earlier, it is in fact a very strange anomaly that the cubs went well over 100 years without winning the World Series. Millions of cubs fans lived and died without ever seeing it happen. There were people who brought televisions and radios and champagne into cemeteries because they promised loved ones they would be together when it happened. Postseason tickets sold for ridiculous amounts of money, I would know because I was one of several thousand people who paid the crazy prices. Anyway for a lot of people it was a big deal.

I don't see any issue with calling it the world series despite only two countries having teams eligible to play in it. Baseball isn't a truly global sport the way tennis, golf and football(soccer) are, but the best players from around the globe migrate to the MLB so it is essentially the 'baseball world'. Snooker and darts have had world championships for ages despite nearly all the champions being from the UK. Rugby Union, Rugby League and Cricket have world cups that only a small part of the globe take party in..England and her former colonies basically.

Belated congrats to the Cubs :clap That mlb.tv app has to be one of the best around to, great for us UK baseball fans since channel 5 decided to stop showing games here

Not sure what any of this has to do with Back to the Future :lol

I would concur with this.

It's like how a lot of people refer to the Super Bowl champions "World Champions" despite them being the champion of only a particular pro league in one country. However, when the entire world pretty much agrees that a certain league (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, NBA) is the premier pro league around the globe, I suppose it stands to reason that its champion is essentially "World Champions" of that sport.

And as others have stated, have you ever seen BttF II?

Wow. How much this movie got right.

No kidding. Once the years 2260s - 2380s are reached, makes you wonder if they will then look back on the Star Trek OS and films to TNG series and films from hundreds of years earlier and compare what those shows and films predicted will be around by that time. :lol

Holodecks, replicators, starships, no money, force fields, transparent aluminum, transporters, etc.

Love that.:clap

"I wish I could go back in time and put some more money on the aged make-up effects.":lol

Wow. How much this movie got right.

Weird they didn't see the mobile phone thing though. Mobiles were exploding in popularity every year in the latter half of the eighties.

And flying cars... just watched Blade Runner - you gotta have flying cars for the future.:lol Yet imagine the reality actually driving a flying car every morning.
