Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I wonder how many of the people who do a 180 end up staying with that new impression and how many end up reverting back to their more critical view once the ''new toy'' excitement has worn off.

That does happen! Defend your purchase. I'm excited about Ripley because I'm excited about all she comes with and to have all that "Alien Universe" tools and accessories would be amazing! But I know myself and have passed on many before. I'm hard hardcore because I'm a one or two a year guy. I can pass on this but it would be sad

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I hope your right! Fingers crossed!
Well, it's all relative isn't it - same old same old really. I think a lot of us that expected nothing but the superlative standard back a few years ago, just accept these things now for what they are, a product. I'd love a 1/6 Jedi Luke that looks like it's about to speak & have the accuracy to match, but this toy game is bittersweet my friend. :monkey2

If folks go in wanting what's not in the photos, sure. :lol

I still think it'll look better in hand though.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I'm waiting for in-hand pics to see what it looks like when all is said and done. If it looks alright I'll be picking up just the head, and tracking down a Kane or Dallas to make a Lucky Star Ripley.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I can't see the production version looking any better than what we have seen. It's a take it or leave it kind of figure.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

The hyperbole is strooooooong in this thread.

Heh, not to get tooo serious on it, but that seems to be the norm for this sort of thing. Everything is either incredible and touched by the hand of god, or a total disaster. There are no grey areas.

It's like that "review" video where the guy describes the figure base as "phenomenal". Imagine how excited he must get about a second chocolate bar falling out the vending machine, or crossing the road without dying ;)

Still, I can't talk, I'm not buying Ripley cos I don't like the jumpsuit material. But hey. It's hardly a shambles because it isn't perfect.

nope, this thread is like all hate from all threads gathered into one :slap

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

The problem is it's an iconic character from an iconic movie. They should be bringing their A game to this figure. The fact they still haven't improved that horrible cat sculpt just adds more to the fact that they aren't trying very hard. At least that's the vibe i am getting.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

terminator is as much iconic, predators are too. they have terrible headsculpts and 90% don't give a ****.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

She looks great when the face is lit up. Better than any of the prior attempts.

Agreed, I'm getting this fig anyway, will go great with my Kane & Dallas. Accessories and base look sweet, Jonesy can just be kept in the cat carrier box permanently.

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

Well, aside from being iconic, Ripley was also played by an attractive woman. I would wager the majority of people on this board are men (myself included despite the screen name). And, and I'm speaking for myself here, but I'm sure I'm not alone, some of us have had a crush on Sigourney Weaver for twenty or more years due to movies like the Alien series and Ghostbusters being a big part of our childhoods.

All that said, I'm not a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson (though I can see why people find her attractive), but imagine if the Black Widow figures didn't do her justice (Again, I'm out of the loop, and maybe some people DO feel that way about the BW figures).

That's how I feel about this figure. It's close, but to say it's a good likeness is disingenuous. It's one of those sculpts that need to be lit correctly and viewed at certain angles to be a "dead on likeness" and that's not what I think Hot Toys should consider a successful sculpt.

Add all of that to the fact that this is an iconic character, and arguably the first real badass, strong female lead character in cinema, and that HT announced her two or three years ago (I forget), they've had more than enough time to work on her that it should be nothing less of phenomenal. Granted, they have been trying to improve her, but it feels like they're giving this iconic character less attention than deserved than some of the newer, less historically important characters. Just look at some of the stuff they've got going on now from movie franchises. That Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie looks damn near perfect in comparison, and I'm sure they would've had FAR less work time on her.

On the other had, like P. said, like with the Predators and Terminator, HT seems to care less about accuracy and just care about hitting a general aesthetic goal. Less people will be able to pick out the intricacies of a Predator's face sculpt, so they just make something that passes as a Predator and lets it ride. And with Arnie, he seems to be one of those people that has a distinct face that never seems to get pinned down perfectly by any sculpt, but due to his stature and how deeply ingrained in pop culture his characters are, HT kind of gets a pass on a "close enough" sculpt, because the costumes are so recognizable. It's also completely possible that Sigourney could be in the same category as Arnie where it's extremely hard to get her likeness dead on, because she has one of those very unique faces.

In a nutshell, HT seems to be taking a less than enthusiastic approach on a figure that should be getting premium treatment due to icon status in pop culture, but are fine with "It's passable as Ripley in her Alien jumpsuit" even though they've had years to work on her, but seem to knock out top tier figures of less important characters in far less time.

You can't keep dangling a carrot in front of hardcore fans for years on end and then drop a subpar product when we know it can be better. Especially when it costs $230. And let's not forget, HT is not NECA. They're not making figures that casual collector's are going to buy. They're supposed to be making top tier figures for a niche market. HT seems to know that certain people that have been patiently waiting will buy it anyway, because it's obviously something we really want, and what other options do we have? I think that's why the hate is flowing pretty hard in this thread, specifically.

And, just so this long post isn't just all words, here's a gif:

Re: Hot Toys: Ellen Ripley - Alien (Updated with new prototype HS)

I think we all get caught up in the hyperbole game in varying degrees.

'Don't care' ? If they didn't care they wouldn't have made the thing - period. Sure, the face needs work, but it's not in hand yet, so I'd relax a little. A big thing is the slenderness of Sigourney's face, & this figure ain't got it. It has wider proportions which immediately skew the likeness. The hair is a big part of it too, & while I'm **GLAD** that it's sculpted, it doesn't really capture her doo in a realistic enough way to be an accurate match.

That said, it's a 1/6 scale representation of a human face. Real human faces flex & move etc, so one screenshot of an actor may look very different to another. Hard to sculpt a one size fits all look sometimes. People are often using the 'RoboMurphy' face sculpt as an example of HT' finest work & a template for their abilities - & it is all that. That sculpt is also based on a face that's plastered with prosthetic appliances which doesn't allow for a lot of movement, so a toy representation of that is easier to create I'd imagine.

I've been a huge fan of Sigourney for decades just like a lot of you guys, & I get where the frustration is coming from. Just wait till folks have the thing to review first, is all I'm saying. I'm more pissed off about the cat. :lol

Well, that's why I said earlier that I'm waiting on in-hand pics. Even good sculpts can be made to look horrible if lit terribly, and cameras, especially people with point-and-shoots, often don't really capture a figure properly.

Now the cat likeness really is atrocious. That is worth getting the pitchforks & burning torches out for. Lawyers for the Estate of Jones T Cat should be able to sue for defamation.
