Alright here's my Doc after taking my best shot at rooting the hair. It took me awhile to dial in how big to make it, since it seems to vary from shot to shot, but I'm pretty happy with how it's looking. And I used pastel to make the hair a bit more grayish brown near the base, since it didn't look quite right being a pure white.

Pretty happy with how it turned out in the end, and glad I decided to take a risk on the rooted versus sculpted hair. In fact this might just be my favorite custom yet now.


(and sorry I don't do commission work, as I just have way too many other projects I still need to get to)

I would pay some big bucks for a sculpt done as good as yours.

Yeah tbh Im just happy to see a Doc sculpt without that open mouth expression, looks like the Doc is catching flies.

Alright here's my Doc after taking my best shot at rooting the hair. That is just phenomenal work, DaveJames! You and Dean have demolished the stock sculpt

Yeah I was originally planning to root the HT head for my Part 2 Doc, but seeing the comparison I just don't think it's going to improve things much. So I'll be waiting to see what Dean comes up with for Part 2 instead.

Although honestly I'd be happy using this same sculpt on all three Docs (with slightly different paintups or looking in different directions), as it's so damn good.

Unfortunately he still hasn't said anything about doing a Marty.

Yeah I was originally planning to root the HT head for my Part 2 Doc, but seeing the comparison I just don't think it's going to improve things much. So I'll be waiting to see what Dean comes up with for Part 2 instead.

There was nothing to dremel. The bald sculpt was painted first, and then I glued on the hair.

Ah, okay. I've seen people dremel them lower than the scalp to build volume, especially at the fringe.

Bravo. Hot Toys should be ashamed. Makes me really want to give rooting a go myself but I’m still no lazier than I was yesterday so shouldn’t make that kind of commitment. Would still be nice to give Eleven a go if he’s willing.

Ah. I suppose I can see that for a figure like WW with her thick dark hair, but Doc's was thin and white so I needed to see more of the scalp underneath. Of course this is only my third time rooting a figure (after Anderson and the Bride), so there's probably lots of different techniques out there I could still learn.

I’m simply saying that praising customizers who work on a smaller number of projects isn’t even close to a fair comparison. If someone is only working on one thing (and in this case not even a full figure but a sculpt only) then yeah it better be damn good.

Hot Toys is doing far more projects at a time. I agree they should be better/more consistent but just because they’re bigger doesn’t mean that’s always going to be the case. By and large though I think they tend to deliver a good product more often than not.

As far as the re-used sculpt, it’s obviously up to you how to feel about it. I’m just saying expecting something different when there was never a promise of that happening and being disappointed to get what was advertised is setting your own expectations up for failure.
