If you look to the left of Krennic in the opening sequence, the one closest to him has a pauldron on, I believe it's the same one that picked up the Stormie doll.

Thanks. OK, maybe I need the Deluxe dude then, just to have the options. I definitely want one with rangefinder.

At least one of the Death Troopers during the beginning was wearing a pauldron, and like The Mike said, I'm pretty sure it was the one who picked up the doll.

Also, I'm pretty much a full time lurker, but I had to post to say that I really can't get my head around why some folks are saying they weren't satisfied by what screen time the Death Troopers got or what they did.
Bescause, seriously,
They were directly responsible for killing a number of the main cast. In how many other SW flicks have we seen any kind of Troopers hit anything other than cannon fodder? I mean, the DT's straight merc'D some fools. It's like some folks expected that they were going destroy the whole rebellion from planet side, then kill and teabag Death Vader, then overthrow Palpatine and kick back in his throne room with some mimosas. Even if that had happened, somebody would have said "meh, they look cool, but I'm still unimpressed, hard pass.

There are 6 Death Troopers during the Erso homestead scene. 3 have the extra gear/harness/pauldron and 3 have none.

If you're only getting one I agree, the deluxe.

I understand it's a running joke that "troopers can't hit", but considering they were a force to be reckoned with to everyone in the Galaxy minus "main" characters I think the joke is a little overused. I was glad this movie put it very in your face that they only miss things really that the force wills them to. Because the force is evil and must create and maintain caos to bring "balance"

I just noticed that it looks like these guys have the rubber body suits like the first order troopers. Giving me second thoughts if that's the case.

Yup, all the troopers in R1 have the same rubber under suit as TFA.

Nope, the Shore and Storm troopers both have a soft material undersuit.

Did they explain how all these variable troops disappear in a new hoPE . It's just the regular troops then, Darth Vader get sick of people providing different outfits. And clones

They were Krennic's personal guards.

Spoilers if you haven't watch the movie.

And they all perish after the planet Scarif they were battling on was destroyed.

They movie does indeed explain this! I'm glad because that was one of my biggest issues.

1) Deathtroopers are Director Krennics personal Elite guard. They get wiped out in the Death Star attack on Scarrif.
2) We don't see a tropical island planet in the OT so no need for Shoretroopers
3) We don't see the tank commanders because no tanks, only AT-ST and AT-AT.

Just got back from 2nd viewing.... guess I'm back onboard for this guy.

Seems the one with the pauldron did the most damage in the film: killed Galen's wife, killed Chirrut, and died with the bomb that took out Baze.

Strangely, contrary to the widely publicized photo, it was a non-pauldron trooper who picked up the white stormie doll.

No spoiler tag?
