The way movie industry works these days, producing figures that long in advance to make sure they are available around theater release would make it a very risky business. Just look at HT release pattern on both TFA and RO. They played it safe with troopers PO before movie release and waited a lot longer to put main casts on the market.
I bet HT would be pissed if they were to develop a prototype for a character that would change radically close to production end. Also, with scripts kept close to the vest, hard to produce items involving dozens of people and make sure everyone is keeping their lips tight.

Not sure if that's the reason. Its not like the look of the character gives any plot details away...usually. Character production photos are released a year or more ahead of time in some cases. I'd say its probably just that it is a lengthy process. Actors need to be scanned. Movie costume design needs to be finalized, then sent to HT. Then HT has to source good matching materials for 1/6 scale reproduction (which is quite difficult trust me). Any accessories need to be modeled/printed/cast. Production factory reservations Corporate red tape, yadda yadda yadda. Anyone who has ever made a figure from scratch with a fabric costume, knows its not easy with many alterations that can take a long time. I agree that troops are released first on purpose, because they are easier (pour into mold...cure...next) and they know they will sell thanks to all the army builders.

Not to mention they better sell those before movie release as they may end up being background or "blink and you miss them" characters.

I think waiting to ship figures based on a movie that came out 6-12 months ago is more risky. And Hasbro never seems to have this problem, or problems keeping a secret among teams that must number over a hundred - though no idea what goes into a 4" fig vs a 1/6 fig

My guess is this is where the NRD changes came from - even SSC routinely puts something (even a re-release/tweaked fig) up for PO and won't ship it until 12+ months later. It's just too long, people move on, so they start cancelling PO's because something better came along - so SSC tightened the thumb screws with NRD's.

If I get this I will pretend it's still a imperial and put it with the imperial troops. I just don't like the rebels. Only Han Solo I actually liked on that side as a kid and that has not changed.

I partly agree with you. If rendition of classic characters such as OT Star Wars will sell whenever they get released, most characters based on current movies, lacking that nostalgia boost, will eventually get overshadowed by the next blockbuster.

Finally saw the movie tonight and really on the fence with this figure. His character was pretty underwhelming to me, maybe I expected more from Alan Tudyk's delivery? I was in a giant, packed theater and the audience only laughed/reacted to one or two of his lines throughout the whole movie. Tough crowd.

I'm 34 minutes in and I like him.

Will probably put an order in when I get to the end.

They're the only two rebels shown so far that I'm interested in. If HT do Cassian then he'll be on the list. (Got a big original Battlestar Galactica vibe from his outfit).

Wow I guess you did have a tough crowd.:dunno I saw it the first time with hardcore Star Wars fans and the second time with more casual fans. Both crowds we're laughing/reacting to all his lines.

Looking forward to the Blu-ray release, because so far this one's a lot better than TFA. Not estimated until April 2017. :gah:
