Dare i say that this sculpt and paint job is on par with some of HT's product?

Yes, the finaly ingredient that I love on HT's newest stuff is the subtle skin texture they have. Fortunately, Ben's got so much texture with his wrinkles and so much facial hair covering, you don't need the skin texture on him, but for future figures, that detail is the last piece to the puzzle.

It literally feels like i got a HT kinda product.(minus the buck body of course)

Best SS SW fig to date IMO.

I agree, that HT skin texturing is getting downright stunning. I'm in love with the look it gives a figure.

ps-AWESOME new pics!

Not quite Dagobah, and not quite films stills, but a little breather from those for a few takes on Luke and Spirit Ben's chat.

Thanks Trev. As a sculptor, do you have any ideas on how they accomplish it? It's so subtle I imagine some tool or object allows them to dab at the raw sculpt and create the effect.

Hey! I just got one from eBay, it was listed as brand new, never opened, and it looks it, but mine is missing the extra hands, a mistake? I'll ask the seller, and also Sideshow, do they send out replacement parts?

Oh, those Ghost shots are fantastic! He looks awesome with Luke! Thanks Sean, you're really making some great photos! I'm loving them all!

I tell you, if I knew how the Hot Toys artists were achieving that texture, I'd be ALL over it. They look like real flesh to me. It's amazing. (really impressed they pulled it off on Elizabeth Swan) If their sculptors are able to make the portraits in a clay, they could use a wider variety of 'stamps'. If they make them like Sideshow, in hard wax, then I'm not at all sure what they're using. To create stamped textures in wax, you have to heat up your 'stamp' material, and that can be difficult on small delicately sculpted features.

It's a real impressive feat in this field. They're making some amazing work in ALL aspects. I hope someday we can come close!

First off, Trev, you made a great sculpt, and as you can see, I'm enjoying ever minute of owning it :D

Secondly, I tell ya, if Sideshow can learn their trick for skin texture and combine it with your human likenesses, that'd truly mark a new era in 1/6 portraiture.

Oh it's an amazing quality, and I full heartedly agree. If Sideshow can start implementing similar techniques, they'll make a very important leap. that kind of innovation wouldn't require raising the budget, it would just require a little more time in the sculpting stage. (I wouldn't mind free eye exams for a year, either ;) lol!)

I can't wrap my head around what they're doing. I'll have to study and try it on some personal pieces, see if I can come up with something.

aside from the texturing, their artists make excellent portraits.

They have picked up some skilled sculptors of late, but one thing I like about the sculpts from guys like you, Andy B. Tim Miller, Oluf, etc., is that you guys somehow manage to add subtle bits of life to your sculpts. I have Hot Toys Rambos and POTC figures with their newer sculpts, and the likenesses are superb, but there's no life to portraits, they're almost zombie-like, but having a feeling like they could come to life, like Sideshow delivers, is all the more better.

Trev, why not ask the guys at Sideshow to ask Hot Toys how they do it the next time they contact them? Obviously they are willing to help you guys out as the Hobbit bodies were done with them. I must admit you guys at Sideshow are still the best, but Hot Toys has come very far, in a extremely small amount of time. They went to mediocore sculpts to Sideshow level within months!

Anyway, Ben is the best in the line for me Trev, so congrats on the fantastic sculpt. You sculpters get so much crap for any little thing that is not right, so you deserve a bit of praise every now and then.

How in the heck did I miss all this?

Sean, Congrats on 8K and also on capturing our beloved Old Ben with such care, skill and heart. Those images are stunning. :D

I did consider doing that, (asking the Sideshow gang) I'll have to see if I can dig up any info. If any one sculptor starts it, everyone will have to do so, for consistency, so It would have to be fairly painless to get a handle on :D

And I'm thrilled you love your Ben figure! It's true that people are very demanding in the level of quality they want from a sculpt, and so we sometimes get some pretty critical comments, but I feel a lot of positive vibes from you guys and others. especially when people are only getting to view the pieces in photos. Thanks for that.

Trev

PS-I can't believe you can fit him into so many scenes, Sean...it really rocks!
