My custom hasbro Hoth outfit came out nicely. Still would like to see what we get in hand to decide which parts I'll use. View attachment 172707

GREAT WORK!

Goes to show you, the basic Hasbro outfit -- shirt, vest, pants -- can be reworked to look about as nice as the SS. Get the correct badges, maybe the gloves and belt/holster and you have a reasonable Luke Hoth. Getting those HT Bespin boots might be tough now.

But you can replace the eyes and mould new lids. The eyes are the least of my concerns with this or the Han sculpt, so I wouldn't touch them myself.. And both looks mile better to me than DX07 - maybe my opinion will change in hand, but comparing photo to photo or photos to my in-hand DX07, that's where I'm at.

You should have waited and just purchased a parted out outfit and a single head for the hat if that's all you're planning to use.

A superb likeness is great to have and can be crucial in some respects, but I try not let it be the end-all of a figure. The whole thing has to come together and in many cases I can overlook likeness issues such as with Bespin Luke, Alice, Indy, etc. Or niggles like small crotched or short-armed Sideshow Sandtroopers and Tusken Raiders. I'm much more critical to likeness if I'm purchasing a single part or sculpt for a specific custom. But poor production, as you've mentioned, is also something that bothers me a lot more, I just don't feel that what I'm seeing of Luke and Han in these photos crosses below that line however. I'm hoping the product in hand isn't drastically different than on screen.

Glad you are happy with it.

Sculpting eyelids? Repainting the sculpt?
That's a crazy amount of work to try and save something inherently substandard. I've done both on several figures, no way this sculpt justifies that time investment. If you are bothered by poor production stay clear of these figures.

As for your suggestion that I should have waited to buy elements separately, no I shouldn't. I needed everything in these sets including the sculpts. I didn't intend on replacing the bodies, but they are **** too.

Luke looks worse in hand than any pics I've seen by the way. Solo is about what you expect. If you are happy with this level of quality on your shelf, good for you man, we just have different levels of quality discernation.

I've got some select Hot Toys on my shelf, so I can deal with substandard.

IMO, if you're all-in on a custom then you're all-in. There's no sense in cutting it short if you want the ultimate. I'd be a lot happier doing no work than doing the work of swapping to Bespin Luke head. That, IMO is most certainly not worth it. For the price of those and other parts, I'd do something else entirely.

Incidentally, I don't necessarily collect 1-offs of "replicas," I collect toys, finished products. If it's a retail item, then I'd really prefer not to touch it if at all possible. I don't modify my Matchbox collection to look as realistic as Autoart examples, nor do I modify my Kenner or Hasbro items to be what they're not.

Also, I was in the process of writing the post when you replied, so you may want to re-read. Not everything I have from HT is substandard. I have mentioned a number of examples already however. That said, everything I have from ThreeA is better than anything I have from Hot Toys by an wide margin.

I may or may not get this Luke. Han and the Tauntaun were always my priority in SS's Hoth line, and I've already snagged the Probe Droid that I initially had no intention of getting.

You mean you edited your post after posting, that's fine, you didn't really enlarge what you said.

No offence Pixel but what you said about customising is ridiculous, what is "all in"?
Have you ever sculpted eyelids on a figure? I've done dozens and dozens. It's incredibly tricky, and only works on certain headsculpts.

And I'm still curious to know what you consider "standard" or better, if the Hot Toys on your shelf are substandard.

Anyway I know you will just dovetail all this as usual and answer around the question, so let's just call it a night.

bonne nuit.

You're not familiar with the term all-in? You seem to imply that you have a really high standard when it comes to figures, yet you'll use a sculpt which you admit doesn't have a great likeness and clothing you claim is poor. In your eyes, I don't doubt that replacing the head and making some changes will create a better likeness, but isn't it worth more effort? Sure, it might take a lot more effort, but if you want something over and above, you do what it takes. If you don't feel that way, that's acceptable too, except you'd prefer to ridicule those that are fine with what Sideshow has done. It seems to be your way or the highway. Do you know that saying?

I don't have a problem replying to you and having you reply to me when you follow along, but when you pick and choose what to reply to and seemingly distort the intention of what was written, it gets difficult. I'm not sure what the purpose of doing that is.

I'm familiar with the term just not your use of it in context. Any customiser here will tell you they do their best, and use the best parts available to them. That is determined by their specific abilities, the amount of money and time they have to spend on a project and what parts available to them.

So you mention that you think the customs being posted look great, except for the Hot Toys head.

One last direct question for you.

Do you think the Sideshow head is better overall than the Hot Toys head?
A simple yes or no would suffice as I said 'overall'.

I'm amazed how good those look Jim especially the vest, those could easily be treated to look as good if not better than the SSC. :rock

Thanks Rory. I did quite a bit of work on this to get it to fit the hot toys body and not look "Hasbro-ish". Including cutting off the gauntlet cuffs to rework them, cutting and slimming the sleeves on the shirt, and overlapping the vest so it was tighter.

I still want to compare mine to the SSC when it arrives to see if I want to keep it as is, sell it and just pick up the parts I need, or do a full on body swap and DX custom head transplant.

Very rough, huge amount to do, but I love the proportions on a TT. Not futzed or weathered/painted.

Now I like it. Great job Rorywan.

Yes, by a wide margin - something I've repeated now a number of times. The only caveat is that I'm comparing either photos only or photos of SS to in-hand Bespin Luke DX07. If I end up with the SS Luke in hand and my opinion changes, you can bet I'll mention it.

Sorry man but this is crazy talk. Rory's custom looks like Luke, SS looks bad. :cuckoo:

I don't really care how anyone else perceives the figures - not sure I ever implied that. If I did, I'm sorry, I hope it's clear now.

I've never really been a huge fan of the HT head, but I have to admit it does look pretty damn good in the Hoth suit (once again, it's the hair that really seems to be screwing these heads up for some reason). Although I still think the Sideshow hatted sculpt comes a bit closer as far as the overall likeness goes.
