People refer to it as 'cold cast porcelain' also. May be durable, but I would not put that to the test on any of my status. The thin parts do break very easy. Also, it doesn't take much to make a polystone statue chip!

SSC SW Completist are becoming an endangered species I'm afraid. I could hold it up for several years, buying every exclusive, inclusive, what have ya... eventually I quit some weeks ago, meaning I passed on the Yoda hut and the 2nd Gamorrean Guard. Once the switch is made, it's easy. Haven't ordered the Dewback nor the 4th Sandtrooper at this point, whereas in the past, I was glued behind my CPU, for every new 12" SSC PPO.

I did the same thing as you.Still getting the SDCC Clone, Firrigan Dan( no more band mbrs though) and Bly.

I stopped buying all the SW 12" when Baby Jacket Han came out. Most figures back them were pretty bad anyways. It's only been in the last few year SS got a clue.

I went for the Trooper. I wasn't able to pick up the first three when they were initially offered...I only just recently got the Sandtrooper Corporal from TA (great store/service BTW) and am kicking myself for missing the other two...the Corporal is great!

The Desert Detachment Trooper look pretty good...comes with plenty of gear for posing/display options and the price isn't that out of line to me, considering what similar figures are going for. I'm sure he's gonna end up being really cool...

The Dewback.....the fact that it's basically a statue doesn't bother me at all...it has an interesting pose, the detail in the sculpt is stunning and all of the accouterments (pike, saddle, bags, etc.) are rendered really well. I think it would look less impressive if the body detail was broken up with joint lines for articulation that I wouldn't see myself using for display....how many different poses would one squeeze out of this thing anyway? Naw...the sculpt is fantastic with it's unbroken lines and surfaces....good choice here.
And while the paint apps here on this prototype are pretty spectacular, well....that's the biggest gamble with this piece to me....I'd be damned impressed if the factory apps come even close to this...

And the price and the big lizard isn't that out of line as far as I'm concerned, considering the materials used, the size of the piece and yes, the fact that like it or not, everything costs more to produce these days. I work in a situation that includes a little of production and manufacturing and I can tell you, everything (material/transportation/shipping) has gone up a lot in just the last year, so that's the way it is....

I wish I could afford that big lizard....guess I could if I shuffled things around. But....like a lot of folks, I'm waiting to see what Sideshow's got in store for the rest of the year at SDCC before I commit to such a big piece....heck, where would I put this thing? I still dig looking at Jabba and his throne...believe me, that's big enough!

I hear ya. I was a completist too, until just recently. It is a little easier after you flip the switch. I passed on quite a few figures where before I got everything.

I will try to get some of them later for a good price if possible, but I am thinking that if figures keep going up. Unfortunatley, I am going to be getting less and less.

I totally get why polystone is an attractive option in terms of capturing the sculpt ... but Sideshow have really made it tough for international collectors on this one. I was able to snag a Jabba because despite his size, he could be shipped internationally relatively inexpensively on account of being rotocast. But the polystone throne, well, I've never found a shipping option for that which has made buying one anything less than crazy expensive.

And while I'm sure there will be those who disagree, rotocast captures enough detail for me - Jabba looks terrific alongside all my other SS SW figures. I don't need them to look 100% as sharp as the original sculpt - they are a generation removed, after all - but I do need to be able to get them here!

Having said all that, I guess I'm also in a tiny minority in terms of SS collectors, living as far away as New Zealand ...

The whole shipping thing all over the world is a joke!

I remember in 2006 $25 U.S. on ebay was expensive. And now Hong Kong is more expensive than most to ship from.

And really we all know that the products are made and boxed in Asian countries and then shipped back to the U.S.

So why not just ship them from the start surely sideshow has sister headquarters.

Anyway why are we paying more for these products in OZ when our dollar is way over the U.S???:panic::panic::panic:

Here's a standard description of what polystone is...
Unlike porcelain which is fired in an oven, Polystone is a cold-cast material in which no heat is used in the manufacturing process, resulting in much greater variations of paint finish.

Thanks, I guess Lee and I were on the right track then. This probably makes it a very cheap and attractive option of manufacture for SS.

Yes, endangered for sure. Its a shame really. Im sure once I pass on one thing, then it's game over.

I just checked this from a European reseller and it will be just under $600/ €400 for the Sandie and the Dewback delivered!!!

Yeah the polystone is just not a good idea for this piece. The shipping, the lack of articulation and the cost makes it all that more easily a pass for many collectors.

I would venture to guess that if it sported some articulation, it would be an easier sell.

keep in mind many collectors (myself included) are getting it because it is a statue.

But, definately a strange decision on SS part - they should have gone "all the way" one way or the other:

full statue diorama, including trooper (similiar to GG)
or
fully articulated dewback to compliment the sandie.

I like it exactly as it is, but my own financial situation probably doesn't allow it. I'm gonna start putting $10 a week aside and maybe I'll have enough by the time it comes out. I don't think they half assed it at all (though will obviously have to see the final paint job).

The comparison to the dinosaur line hit home with me. From what I've read, that line kicks all sorts of ass, so if this is on par with that I think "going statue" was the exact right move.

I disagree very strongly about sculpting the trooper on top. Its a cross product and IMO works great that way.

Did I just talk myself into this....?

I'd have loved to see them offer a vinyl version as well for $100 cheaper. I would have considered that. Polystone for the statue buffs and plastic for the cheapos like me. :D

I don't think offering the same statue in two different materials would make any sense at all. They'd have to have two completely different production processes, which would actually make things more expensive. And who would pay $100 extra just for the privilege of having it in polystone, assuming they looked identical?

I say that because of collectors like ambash who are interested in buying a polystone statue rather than a vinyl "figure". Those are the types that would probably spend the extra dough for it. Me, I don't care if it's in a heavier material as long as it looks nice and could be made more affordable

Two processes wouldn't make it any more expensive as long as demand is there. If they could sell more in vinyl at a lower cost and still sell the polystone version then why not. They could even have the vinyl version sans base for that matter.
