I don't think the Ex selling out has anything to do with anything. I'm willing to bet wholesale quantity of these figures were remarkably low and thats where SSC lost their shirt on this line.

Well, if the demand had still been there, these figures would've stayed sold out and never hit the site as "In Stock," or "2nd Chance" let alone gift card status for an Ex. Additionally, if that demand had remained, any retail purchases and/or returns would've easily sold out just as fast. Consumer demand just didn't meet supply. And there's something to be said for the fact that, where before they were just growing mold on Sideshow's website, Frodo's sold out only after interest renewed with the coming of Gimli. His clothes are needed for most of the Merry, Pippin and Bilbo builds.

Well, then what explains all the in stock and second chance Star Wars items?

And if just if interest was just for the builds, you can get them alot cheaper on eBay and in other places than SS.

How can you say they lost their shirt on this line?

Actually, as I've been discussing with Marc, the sellout of the Hobbits only tosses dirt onto the already burried coffin. The reason they're selling out now is because those that want to complete the Fellowship on their own are taking the initiative to pick up the remaining pieces for three Hobbit customs, Bilbo, Merry and Pippin. Otherwise, make no mistake about it, they'd still be available. Additionally, the fact that the remaining stock sold out because of the customs, further emphasizes the reality that there just isn't enough interest in the 12" LOTR line to justify a profitable release.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that the reason Gandalf has started selling more as well is due to the light at the end of the tunnel that is the potential of the custom Hobbits to fill out the gaping holes Sideshow left in the Fellowship.

But don't you think people who are making custom hobbits already have Gandalf? I know a few people who aren't big LotR collectors that have bought him because he's such a great figure.

That's entirely different, apples and oranges. First, the Star Wars line isn't cancelled. Second, They've already made most of the main characters for that line (save for the droids and Chewie). Third, the Hobbit bodies are unique to Sam and Frodo. The Frodo Ex is crucial to the build for his outfit. Additionally, the Ex has the extra sword. You can't very well have Merry and Pippin holding Sting which is the only sword available with the regular version.

But I wonder if Sideshow were to cancel the Star Wars 12" line, if those figs would also disappear for customs... Probably not since they at least made most of the main characters.

Most, yes. But just going back to the beginning of this thread, you can see where after the Gimli was under way, much interest was rekindled and several freaks finally picked up Gandalf who before, had posted that they were passing and selling the other figures due to SS canceling the line before completing the Fellowship.

"Tis but a scratch!" :lol

This answers your questions officially:

ASK SIDESHOW:

You have recently revealed lots of great new 12-inch but nothing for The Lord of the Rings. Are there new figures of this license in production at the moment?

During Spooktacular, in a candid moment in the chat, it was revealed that the 12-inch LOTR line is on hold.

This is true…

Sideshow is moving forward with development on all other LOTR lines, including Premium Format, Dioramas, and Legendary Scale Busts. We remain committed to the LOTR license and love the world of Middle-earth.

It was a very tough decision to put the 12-inch LOTR line on hold. It is possibly the most difficult 12-inch license for development and production, challenging Sideshow to maintain the high quality and accuracy standards that we pride ourselves on. Each character requires unique problem solving, due to details of the costume, weathering or other paint applications, or different body shapes or sizes. As we’ve proven, they are certainly within the realm of possibility, but they do take a lot longer than the average product for development and production. Our development team is talented and not at all afraid of rolling up their sleeves and digging into the work when it is appreciated by the fan base and collector community.

Unfortunately, solicitation of figures like Faramir, Frodo and Samwise demonstrated that the interest in the 12-inch LOTR line is not as healthy as in years past; that the fan base is not as large as in those golden years. We say this knowing that there is an enthusiastic, loyal fan base remaining for our 12-inch line - there simply aren’t enough of us at the present moment. That being said, things certainly could change.

12-inch Gandalf was a true success on all levels, and we are very proud of the final product. While it is very disappointing to all of us to put the line on hold, we would rather have the line “end” on a high note rather than fade out on a whimper. Gandalf will, for now, stand as our favorite entry in our The Lord of the Rings 1:6 scale line.

Yup, should pretty much end the talk of anything happening. Not even sure when The Hobbit comes out this will generate this coming back. Its sad all the way around and pisses me off at the same time.

With Frodo and Sam not selling out quickly, I knew it was only a matter of time. Here's to hoping that the Hobbit increases interest again. It's not that SS isn't committed to the range, it's just that people were not buying.

They haven't really said anything new here. But if any of you have a doubt as to what "On Hold" means I suggest reading between the lines.

But I would like to thank SS for coming out and officially putting our hopes to rest.

I agree -- good on you SS to finally admit the truth.

I wish they would do this more often when lines are finished.

Love your Davros avatar, Pix!

I think the Hobbits were better than GTG.

At least now we know it's over until maybe the hobbit
