Whoever said this thread goes round and round is right.... all of this has been speculated many times over.
did somebody say "round and round"?:rock

Just PM when you decide to start on your custom Gimli. I'll help you out with the project where needed.

Thanks, but I would never ever consider attempting to create a custom anything! I most certainly do not have the skill, nor the time. I also like the packaging of all of the products almost as much as the pieces themselves.

As for the line, I think it would have worked in their (SS) favor if they had developed a few figures, such as Gimli, Pip & Merry, and perhaps Saruman and a Ringwraith, but not announce them until they were close to being shipped. (similar to the current EII Obi Wan). This way excitement would not wan after a year of waiting. There would be less cancellations as well.

That sounds like a very good idea! :banana

For the LOTR line, I easily forgave the buck and the "loose" Hobbit bodies for the sheer awesomeness of the outfits and accessories. While some of the sculpts were off a bit, some were very good and the overall figures were easily some of Sideshow's best. Now why would I pay near $100 extra for pretty much the same thing on a TrueType? If they took the villains and started with those, possibly I might be interested. Although I'd take Sauroman and put him on a buck to match Gandalf. But, if they pick up the line and start with repeats, like Aragon, Gimli, Frodo, Sam, Boromir, Legolas and Gandalf (I don't think they'd do Faramir in the first or second batch) and it's likely that's what they'll do first, I'm out. Judging by peoples actions with the HellBoy line, some people are, as I already stated, full of crap anyways. Everyone screams "I'd buy!" and then these figures would sit in a warehouse and collect dust until they're discounted to wholesale or below. And when the first couple of fresh batches don't sell at $170+ which is what HT would charge, and retailers stop ordering because they can't move them at a profitable price, how long do you think the HT line will last? If you think Americans are in this business to make money, you should see the Asian markets. Especially in a cutthroat market like Hong Kong.

i dont know why youd pay or not pay for something. i guess to each their own. hot toys isnt about the true type for me. its about the overall quality. sideshow did great. but i think we can all agree more so at the end. im just saying if the line is on "hold". and you all say that means done. i think it looks most likely that hot toys will carry on the torch and it will be even better than what we have seen. not just because its hot toys. but the natural progression. we are seeing amazing things here. can you imagine in 2 years what these things are gonna look like? exciting time to collect! i dont love the extra price tag. but id rather SOMEONE take over . id love to see more LOTR. and you know? sideshow themselves may actually continue when the hobbit comes out and renewed interest is sparked. im all for that too!

You clearly didn't read the post. I won't buy duplicates. Why buy a HT Gandalf?! I already have Sideshow's. Same with all the other LOTRs they made. I have no interest in starting again from scratch. If they made others that aren't already in existence, I'd be more than happy to buy them.

You can sit on the porch waiting for as long as you need. Nobody's coming from Sideshow. Saying "on hold" pretty much means they're moving on. Otherwise, where's the new Craig Bond figure? Casino Royale was a HUGE success and Quantum of Solace raked in a hell of a lot of cash their opening weekend! Oh, wait...that line was put "on hold." And the new Buffy character? That line was put "on hold" too. What about Planet of the Apes? That line's also "on hold." Or the Universal Monsters? Or Newline House of Horrors? Hey, how about the X-Files line? or Sean of the Dead? Where's my zombie Ed?! All I'm saying is there's reason to believe that the line is put to pasture going off of their track record.

As for HT picking up the line, it's been said repeatedly in this very thread. LOTR isn't big in Asia. Judging by the fact that all 3 excusives for Frodo, Sam and Gandalf are still available and not even "low quantity," it would seem MANY others have lost interest as well. Why would HT pick up a dead line?! They did that with HellBoy with all the HT fanboys crying "I'LL BUY IF YOU MAKE!" I call BS. It just doesn't make sense for HT to pick it up at all. If nobody's buying the Hobbits (which were designed with HotToys by the way) and Gandalf's rotting on Sideshow's website, all for under $100, why do you even think enough people would fork out $170 to make it remotely profitable for HotToys?!

dude im not gonna argue with you for pages here. im just saying that sideshow or hots toys (or hot toys still working with sideshow) WILL continue this line when the hobbit comes out. peace out

In three years we'll likely see some kind of 12" Hobbit figures from some company. Whether those will include characters like Merry, Pippin and Gimli from LotR is in doubt. The Hobbit and LotR are not the same thing. And even if Sideshow does makes them, we likely won't see them until closer to 4 years. I wonder what HT prices will be then. $200-250 a figure?

Why would they include LOTR characters even if they do make Hobbit figures? It doesn't make sense to hold out hope for The Hobbit to save the LOTR line. The best you could hope for is that there would be some overlap, like Bilbo or potentially another Gandalf (although I don't know how they could do it much different or better).

When The Hobbit films (I believe it's two, right?) come out, we MIGHT see 12" figures from The Hobbit. If Sideshow has the license still, and do make them, we will be able to pick up some great characters from those films to go with the ones from LOTR. However, with the fast amount of unique characters in The Hobbit, it makes sense that they'd focus on getting most or all (though I seriously doubt all, as they'll probably leave us hanging with that line too) characters made from those films before even looking back to LOTR. But I'm willing to bet that the only chance of a new 12" line even happening is if by that time, both Hobbits and Gandalf sell out.

Just to burst everyone's bubble - we've seen that LotR fans are NOT 1/6 fans. There is no crossover except those few diehards you see here. Gandalf is just about as good as a 1/6 figure can get - HT or SSC - and he's still not sold out. However his edition size is bigger than the hobbits, so I'd say he's probably not a failure in SSC's eyes.

The Hobbit will be a completely new entity and a completely new license. Weta is deeply entrenched in that project and want to become a collectibles company themselves. They will most likely have the license for statues and such for the Hobbit and SSC may be shut out. But even if SSC does get the license - 1/6 won't be on the table because they've seen that the market isn't there.

I appreciate the "glass is half full" attitude - but I really don't see it happening.

I have to agree. I'm usually a "glass is half full person" but I don't see anymore 1:6th LOTR or any 1:6th Hobbit items from the high end folks. It seems a decent portion of the fanbase for LOTR/Hobbit are more into their polystone pieces and take the approach thats the ONLY collectible type worthy enough.

The exclusive Gandalf second chance is sold out again, though it says "check back later". Not sure what that means since I've never seen that before.

I'm still holding out hope, no matter how futile it is. :)

Not even PFs? :sick

I think it's in SS's best interest to not officially cancel the line, at least until (if) Gandalf sells out because people generally run from dying lines.

I can't deny, I ditched almost all of my LoTR figures when it took them so long to ship the Hobbits and the product announcements slowed to a halt. Not unlike how HT handles properties, you have to strike while the iron is hot, and in my opinion SS alone is to blame for this one, not the fans.

I think if fans knew there was a Gimli Lurtz and misc. Orc further down the pipeline, Gandalf would've been long-gone by now.

But maybe that's just me....
