I was able to find some time between digging a trench and boarding up the windows of my home from the masses of gun toting criminals heading north of the border because apparently one cannot defend themselves w/o being prepared....

I simply posted the data, take from it what you want. Like I said Im indifferent. I must be a simpleton if I dont think that giving 10 random people guns wont lead to someone eventually somehow getting shot. Whereas if they had no guns, the odds are alot less. Must be me.

I like many Canadians Im sure will never see the need to own or possess a gun, If you live in a place where you need it to be safe them by all means...

It's too bad we all have to, but all my buddies got one so Iwent and got a few just to make me feel safe!

I was thinking of something more along the lines of changing the way this country dealt with poverty. Crime began to skyrocket in the 70's. It's not hard to figure out why.

Limiting aid programs would be a good start. Force those abusing the system to get off their ***** and get work. Many who're leeching off the system right now refuse to work because they deem some forms of employment beneath them.

That doesn't work for crimes of passion. Punishment is never a deterrent to committing a crime of passion,because people don't think about consequences.
Would polluting the air and water, land, ect, which can kill people be considered murder? When people dump wastes irresponsibly as a part of normal business practice, THAT is something that could be deterred by the death penalty. Cigarette smoking in public, too. Secondhand smoke causes cancer. The death penalty could serve as a deterrent to that perhaps.
It never deters killing in the heat of the moment, because in order for it to do so, people would have to be thinking clearly, which they are not.

What a bleak, nihilistic vision. I feel sorry for you that you look upon fellow human beings and think that rapacious, unforgiving competition is what is best for them. But then many of them are "worthless" in your mind.

Interesting that I recall you recently decrying the environmental notion of "over population" as 'talk that belonged in Auschwitz'. I guess those of us that support the notion of social welfare states are just mad when we also recognise notions like ecological carrying capacity or non-renewable resource depletion.

All your demands have historical precedents rooted in the nineteenth century. There is a reason literally all developed nations have moved away from that pure capitalist/libertarian/social darwinist model of society to some form of regulated markets and social democracy: because it decreased human suffering and increased socioeconomic stability. Does that mean it has no flaws? Of course not, but it is demonstrably better than the society that came before in terms of poverty rates, access to education, social mobility, distribution of wealth (becoming a problem again), environmental protection, etc.

Only drug prohibition of all those moves has proven a colossal failure and then chiefly because we have addressed it as a police-military enforcement issue, not a social issue.

The inanity and extremism of your views is revealed in your label of "idealism" cast my way. Unlike you, I readily admitted that social democracy has problems and makes mistakes. Real social policy needs change and adjustment.

You are the one pushing a matter-of-fact, idealistic vision of pure market forces, flawless retributive justice, etc. It is simplistic and absurd. It appeals to a certain segment of angry people nursing various grievances and paranoid fears of the government.

Your reference to the "inner city" is also revealing. No liberal or social democrat anywhere is pleased with the current state of urban poverty. Conservatives and libertarians in the United States have fought so ferociously against social welfare since 1980, that any hope of reform has been destroyed by the need to even preserve some social safety net. Your own views exemplify that antagonism, down to even denying people food stamps, let alone health care or unemployment protection.
