Only good thing about this is..... FINALLY more than 2 girls agreed to do one thing at the same time. When was the last time this happened? I have 3 sisters and they can't even agree on what time to leave the house let alone 17 girls. This is a rare occurrance indeed. :lecture

I disagree. Usually all girls can agree on when they can get up to go to the bathroom together.

getting pregnant for someone that'll love you forever? WTF. what a bunch of idiots.
see i was always raised that you get pregnant WITH someone that will love your forever.
Here in Florida the statutory rape charges are relatively flexible. If the minor is over 16 and the adult is under 25 (I believe those are the correct ages, I can double check when I'm at internship again) then it is okay. Of course there is some difficulty when the person is over 25 and its not inconceivable that a 17 year old may pretedn to be older and get someone over 25.

Also with statutory rape there usually has to be something to instigate it. At my internship site I work with children who are abused and they do forensic interviews there as well. One time there was a case of a mother alleging statutory rape, the girl denied she ever had sex with the guy and since there was no real evidence the case was closed. So in an instance like this unless the girls press charges or something then the men should be fine. Of course it's hard to tell what these girls will do.

At any rate statutory rape laws may have their flaws, but trust me they are much better to have than to not. I've seen plenty of cases where men are manipulating young girls (like 13 and such) into sexual relationships.
you sound like someone else that will be working in the Social Services like myself. i just graduated with my B.S.W. and when i read about this it made me sick in the sense that they are kids that are intentionally making adult decisions without comprehension of the LONG TERM consequences. they have no idea what it will be like raising a child and their life is just beginning. and i can't remember who, but someone stated that the grandparents will end up getting ditched with the infants... this IMO will be the best case scenario for the infant. at least they will have the chance to be raised and cared for by a blood relative that truly loves them.

Yeah, I'm a children's therapist intern. I'll be getting my degree in August. :winner Congratulations on your graduation! BSW = Bachelor's of Social Work? I'm not good with all this alphabet soup we use.

My reaction was much the same as yours, as well as wondering what the motivating causes behind it were. Personally I believe that everyone does the best they can all the time with the tools available to them at that time. So I wonder what they are wanting and what circumstances led to them being pregnant being the best available option. Whoever said that they are probably are looking for unconditional love is who I am most inclined to agree with.

But apparently that grandparent didn't do such a bang up job raising the mother.

The issue is standards of society. The good old days were better to the extent that a large percentage of people will follow established guidelines because there were consequences. When there was a stigma attached to bad behavior, when reputations mattered. It is also clear by the fact that the number of abortions skyrocketed after Roe v Wade that the old days method of social stigma worked better. My father was born in 1923 and I remember having conversations with him about things like this and he would say "no one did things like this". When I graduated High School in 85 there were probably 40% of the girls who were still virgins. These days I doubt there are 40% who have slept with boys and had at least one lesbian encounter.
As the Hippie generation took over the country with their disdain of the values of their parents. After all THEY (The baby boomers) went to college, so they must be smarter than the common sense of the previous generation. Ideas like commitment were old fashioned and unnecessary and "free love" was celebrated. Well looking at these 17 girls, there certainly is a price tag attached to their "free love" and the people paying for it are the teens, their children, their parents and the tax payers. As a society we focused so much on not hurting peoples feelings and harming their self esteem, or offending people, we have lost sight of doing what is right instead of what feels good.
I keep hoping for a backlash and a swing back to more traditional values similar to what happened after 'the roaring twenties'. Maybe we need the hardship of a depression and a sink or swim reality to bring people around to thinking about what is acceptable and what's not, and about what's cool and what's skanky and trashy.

When I was teaching high school for the last 33 years, I used to do an exercise where we would create a law where a person needed a license to become pregnant. The government would place a birth control chemical in the public water system and all food companies would be required to use it in their products to insure 100% participation. If you wanted to then get pregnant and have a child you would have to do the following to get a license under a Brave New World government --- (there would be medical injections by a government doctor to neutralize the chemicals and providing a window period for conception)

*** be at least 18 years of age
*** be married for at least one year
*** take parenting classes
*** show you can financially support a child without going on charity
*** be of good moral character

We would discuss the pros and cons of this. Almost everyone concluded that such a system was too restrictive and did not like it despite the benefits to the larger society as a whole. Some of the benefits they cited would be child abuse would go way down, public welfare rolls would go way down, parents would actually care for children with some knowledge and preparation, there would be no unwanted children, total idiots could not have children, etc.

Then I would ask them what are the qualifications to have a baby today.
Answer: there are none. Anyone who can have a few minutes of unprotected sex can have a baby despite age, education, financial status, moral qualifications, marital status or anything else.

Most of the kids would see that perhaps the current was too lax and the brave new world system was too restrictive. Like most things, perhaps there is a middle path that we need to look at.

That sounds like a good plan to me. To quote Parenthood.. (I guess in this case replace father with mother..)

Tod: You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car - hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming ^^^^^^^ be a father.

are you freaking kidding me??
i was watching fox [its my favorite sitcom] and i saw this story run. Its about 17 girls that made a pact to get pregnant so they could raise their children together. one of the father's was a 24 year old homeless man. Now what the frak is going on in our culture?! Right after the story aired i also heard that Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth [TAKING ALL BETS TO HOW LONG IT TAKES TILL THIS HAPPENS AGAIN!] Is it something in the water or are our kids just getting more retarded by the hour?

What ever happened to "the talk"? what ever happened to not raising your child like a whore or a pimp? It just really phases my mind on how retarded our kids are getting nowadays. How do you feel about this story?
