Re: Official Hot Toys Famous Celebrities/Icons line...

I just spotted this over at OSW. This is that new HT line base of Celebrities and not nessessarily based of a Movie, it's more about the person... So I hear.

The first one is James Dean and it looks great. I think this line will be great. Can't wait to see who else is in the cards!

Is this the same James Dean sculpt?

I thought it looked like a different head sculpt at first, but there is a very close resemblance to the one in the bottom pic, in fact I'd have to say they were the same sculpt.

Something you guys might not have noticed, but the article says the size is 30 cm, it'll have 20 points of articulation, that it's expected to be out in May, and that it'll cost around $60, more or less. The belt is real leather and the blue jeans are made of real denim. It also says this is the "Cowboy version", so it sounds like there will be other Deans on the way, for anyone wanting a "Rebel" version. :D

Btw, the name of the new line is written in Japanese as "マイコン", which could be either "MYCON" or "MICON"... not sure how it'll be spelled in English. I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, either, but I guess we'll find out more later.

EDIT: Well bugger that! ... guess I should've read Dave's post before hitting the "send" button! Anyway, HT's site has it all there, and the line is called "MICON". :monkey1

Yes, only see a difference in the way the ears are sculpted.

Re: Official Hot Toys Famous Celebrities/Icons line...

Just got the February HT Newsletter. Here is the official Announcement:

Hot Toys new series - M Icon brings you the 1/6th scale James Dean collectible figure (Cowboy Version) - In 2008, Hot Toys is proud to announce a brand new collectible figure series – M ICON series, a collection of well-known and legendary personalities. The first collectible of the series is the Hollywood iconic actor in the 50’s - James Dean, who was too short to be an actor. To memory this legendary actor, we are bringing you this 1/6th scale James Dean collectible figure which featured in his iconic Cowboy costume. Take the first peek of this freshly prototype today!

The Line itself is called "M Icon" two separate words and will feature Known and Legendary Personalities NOT just folks from the 50s.....sounds like anyone who is easily recognizable like Dean is fair game..

Thanks for clearing that up. The Japanese are pronouncing it "maikon", not separately as you suggest... but that's not surprising. The article just mentions a return to the 50s in regard to this figure... I'm glad to hear HT has broader plans. :D

Btw, just curious, but do you pronounce your name like German, or like English? The katakana in your sig is like the German pronunciation ("Mi-ha-e-ru") and I just wondered if it was intentional. For English, Japanese write it "Ma-i-ke-ru" (マイケル).

Re: Official Hot Toys Famous Celebrities/Icons line...

Great looking figure, not one I need to have (not a huge Dean or Cowboy fan), but I'm really excited to see what else this line can offer!

And looks like we were right about just being actors, no mention of any film on the HT site.

The figure looks fantastic!
If my personal economy allows it, I'll sure be picking this one up.

It's not about the sports, it's about the uniforms. A guy in shorts isn't nearly as visually interesting as the uniforms in American football or hockey. Make a great looking goalie and I wouldn't care who it was, because I'd be buying it just for the equipment.

I think Michael Jordan would sell quite well as would several other greats.

Jordan, MAYBE, but it's hard to say even with him. I've seen McFarlane's pieces and old Kenner Starting Lineup figures warm pegs repeatedly. Figurines are sort of a low point for sports memorabilia and not as big a market as cards, autos, and more high end pieces like that. I agree with Michael though, some sports, just based on design and the components to the figure would hold appeal from actual sports fans to even customizers wanting to bash the parts into something.

I have no doubts Jordan would sell well enough to make as would Tiger Woods. These guys reach more than to people than just sports.

Well it's not the popularity of the sports figures I wonder about, it's when it comes down to certain memorabilia. I think a lot of people would rather spend $150 on a Jordan autograph than a Joran collectible figurine. I'm sure there's a good number of collectors of figures and statues etc. who are also sports fans and would enjoy such thing, but I'm not sure those numbers would be high enough to justify the investment on HT's end. If they did a Jordan, odds are like the Predator line, we'd see a gazillion variants to try and defray costs, especially with someone like Jordan where just under 23 they could do half a dozen various uniforms based on the evolution of the Bulls uniform over his career, then add to the mix 45 and his Wizards years. I'd love an HT Jordan, especially with current sculpt quality coming from HT, I just don't see it happening unfortunately.

It probably won't happen but I just think Jordan and Woods would sell well enough. They just encompass more than sports. The price would always be an issue but I know old starting lineups go for a decent chunk or they used to anyways.

If you find a legit Jordan auto for $150 please let me know. I've never seen one go for that.
