Saw it. It kind of bored me. Was filled with plot holes, and had a very weird ending. Overall the gimmick wasn't enough to save it or make it a particularly good horror film.

Why wasn't the daughter allowed to go into the basement? The dad seemed to make a big deal out of it, but there didn't seem to be any reason why.

I saw the film and absolutely loved it. To answer your question I assume he didn't want her going down there and turning on sound equipment by accident and attracting the monsters, because if she did turn a radio on and it was making a horrible noise with feed back she'd have no idea and all the monsters would come for the family. I feel this is illustrated in the beginning with the plane, the plane was on and making noise, if she heard it she may have been able to do something.

Well I caught this tonight. Glad it was on $5 Tuesday because I thought it was just okay.

It basically felt like an episode of Stranger Things to me, the creatures looked like demogorgons and the deaf daughter looked almost exactly like Dustin, lol.

I found the abundance of false jump scares annoying, in fact the middle hour of the film was pretty much nothing but those. My showing had a pretty decent crowd though and the audience was really eating up the jump scares and even ended up applauding at the end so obviously people are liking it. It just didn't really strike a chord with me which is too bad because this really should have been my kind of movie. I loved Signs and was very impressed with Gareth Edwards' first flick "Monsters" which had a similar premise but that was told in a much more compelling and credible manner IMO.

Personally I was really able to get into this film.. I don't know if its because I am a dad or what but I found it very intense..

See I think it's actually because I'm a dad that the very first sequence turned me off from the get go. I thought they were incredibly stupid parents to let the boy trail so far behind them when apparently so much as a sneeze will get you killed.

I also felt like the screenwriters didn't give more than a passing thought to their own "rules." The creatures are blind and must depend on exterior sound to "see?" Then how the heck can they sprint through a dense forest of silent trees without bumping into every one, lol.

Well like I said the audience I was with seemed to really enjoy it as do most of the folks who have posted in this thread so you might like it as well. Nothing in this film held a candle to the bear scene in Annihilation though.

If I were to rank the 2018 movies I've seen in the theater so far it'd go:

1. Ready Player One
2. Annihilation
3. Death Wish
4. 12 Strong
5. Tomb Raider
6. A Quiet Place
7. Black Panther

Death Wish above AQP.... Man oh man.. Unforgivable.

What can I say I was genuinely engaged in DW from beginning to end, lol. Both DW and AQP offer great "what would you do" type scenarios and I found myself empathizing with Bruce Willis' character much more so than Krasinski and Blunt in AQP.

DW had a tighter narrative, was internally consistent, and solid performances all around (though AQP featured commendable acting as well.)

Are you the alt right?

Shayamalan can really bring the humanity when he’s in top form. I guess I like Signs better too but AQP had a lot to admire.

I guess AQP just hit too many of my pet peeves. I don't like an over-reliance on jump squares and definitely don't appreciate an over-reliance on "false" jump scares. The kids knocking over the lantern on the carpet and it sounding like a cannon on a battleship going off was just obnoxious IMO.
