Re: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series!

I could never understand Hollywood perception of Chinese. It's like we all know kung fu or taichi or wing chun.

I mean it is a cool scene and Coulson is just hilarious espeically since May didn't utter a single word.

May is a cool character, don't get me wrong but it is once again the stereotypical kung fu chinese girl that doesn't say much and will practice kung fu during their free time.

I am Chinese but I sure don't know Kung Fu. I favour jujitsu and judo and lightsabers.

I'm not Chinese but I do know Chinese martial arts and it seems like May has a lot of anxiety over something and Tai Chi is a great form of therapy for that.
I think Whedon must know someone who has some deep affection for the art since he had Angel do it as well.

Too close to call. I'll wait until I see her eating noodles.

I don't think the fact that she's Asian has anything to do with it, Black widow isn't Asian and she's an *** kicker as well, I don't find May to be stereotypical in the slightest.

These strong asskicking female characters are cliched at this point. We need a weak and subservient female character with no inner or outer strength. She should even be ugly. Thats what we need. For a change.

Wasn't Fugly Betsy really popular when it was on a few years ago?

In all fairness, they've already established her as a martial artist with the whole "she is the cavalry" stuff. It makes sense that Coulson would happen upon her during a workout (her private time) for a not so persuasive discussion.

Besides, knowing Tai Chi myself, I used to use it in my 20's to decompress from stressful situations/environments. It's a great form of "active meditation" that allows you to reflect inward and relax. :huh

And now look what you do for stress relief! :lol

They didn't think that one through very extensively did they. Sometimes there's only need to address a single tittybaby.

Re: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series!

Another ok episode. Still liking all the characters, but I can't help but get annoyed at how vague all their missions seem to be. All these vague threats and enemies. They feel extra "McGuffin-y" to me, in that the threat is so unimportant and inconsequential and that it's just there to give the characters something to do. It's so close to being a great show, but by having such light fluffy missions really holds it back.

I think I mentioned somewhere here in this thread that a show like Fringe would show the threat of the episode attack a person or place, so the audience knows there is something real that must be stopped before it takes more lives. Here, it's just a (I can't think of any other word to best describe it) vague threat that has to be stopped. The only slightly better episode has been last week's with Simmons getting infected because you saw the real threat beforehand, killing the scout leader. Ok, so SHIELD was sent in to contain the thread. Good. Then Simmons gets infected, even better. You see that something truly important is at stake, which gives you something to really root for.

The show is *this* close to being good. It has a solid foundation in its great characters. They just need to write better plots for them.
