I love the AvP comics, but noone should ever have to apologize for not liking that uninspired crapfest of a movie. I was actually embarrased knowing that there were people that knew I liked AvP comics that may have seen the movie and changed their entire opinions of me. I'm sorry Dave, you seem awesome, but man that movie hurt my feelings :D

No problem. To each their own. I thought it was fun and entertaining. I don't give a damn about the humans. It's like Jurassic Park, you go see it for the monsters and to see the humans get offed.

I like Fincher. But I couldn't get into AIII. It had some nice visuals and it managed to capture some of the creepiness of the original, but they lost me when they did away with Newt and Hicks (again - they did it in such a rushed manner). Plus - I liked the Hicks/Newt DH storyline alot and was hoping the 3rd movie would have some connection to that storyline.

And Scar's dissection of the Alien warrior is longer and more graphic which would have merited an R rating.

was that the only difference with the uncut version

Which is exactly why I loved it. It was very real. The heroes all die. Tragic and beautiful at the same time.

Same here Dave, I enjoyed it. Sure it's not my favourite movie, but, it was OK. I know there are a lot of people out there who HATE Paul Andersons films..but, I don't mind them.

I was under the understanding that a second AvP movie was in production, with a two brother's at the helm... It's supposed to be very dark and graphic and heading to a R rating - I remember reading a interview with one of the Predators that was also in AvP at Superherohype.com. He said they're giong to be a completely different movie - Something the Hardcore fans can really sink there teeth into...

I get back to you all on this...

Definitely a movie for rental and not to spend $10 at the movie theatre for. I have no desire to watch it again.

Got the extended version for Christmas. My wife actually loves this one, and feels it was a great way to combine the two franchises. I think it has it's merits, but none so far have been better than Alien 2, especially the DC.

Here's what AVP is to me: A piece of crap, but a FUN piece of crap. I don't count it in either franchise. But it's like "Nothing on TV on Sun morn, but AVP...sounds ok."

I thought it was ok. Could have been a lot better and I mean a lot, but I don't think it's the huge piece of trash that many do.

Yup, it sucks.

I personally am only a fan of:
Alien, Aliens, Predator, and Predator 2

Those all rock IMO.

the movie was trash... never managed to capture the essence that made the original films excellent in their own right: suspense and horror. AvP was a shallow comedy...

anyway, i do think that it's difficult trying to make a new film based on such an old and established franchise. the audience has seen everything, it's hard to blow them away with something new. if directors try to emulate the style of the original films, they'd be criticized for not being original...

it's gonna take a brilliant production team to make any sequel that would be as good as the original, if not better. the Alien and Predator franchise have seen a steady decline throughout their later films, and AvP is simply the lowest of the low

Yup. Exactly the type of garbage I like to watch on Sunday morning eating Sat. left over White Castle with my wife in bed. Best days of my life!

I think Dave said this already--but the Dark Horse comics did rule. The scene where the Predators just walk on a farm a kill the whole family and the dog in front of some kid. That kicked ass! I remember reading some Image Chromium cover special Jae/Jim Lee ed. and thinking "This kicks way less ass than the Predator!"

Aw. The 90s.

I liked AvP. I felt it was a decent action film. I thought the PG13 rating was issued because it was based on a comic and therefore the thought of a younger audience was more likely. Alien III, to me, was the abomination of the series.

Although I must say I enjoy watching it more than A:R.
i thought A:R was a decent popcorn flick, though it was also crap compared to the previous installments. i loved the art direction of A:R for some reason...

AvP was ridiculous to me...

Ok - I'll chime in. I think, dramatically, AVP is a total piece of garbage and Paul Anderson needs to stick to making films based on video games. The guy seems to have a handle on the look of these characters and their environments, but looses the threat of them in the translation. The Aliens were unstoppable (nearly), blind killing machines with no emotional response. I think this was perfectly captured by Ridley Scott in the first film, and to a lesser extent, Cameron and Jeunet. You could not reason with them - they were purely instinctual.

The Predator, conversely, was conniving and tricky - it planned its kills perfectly. However, at the same time, it wanted a challenge. In AVP, it was clear that the Preds outmatched the Aliens. The Aliens were reduced to growling animals and, despite their agility, seemed far to soft. The Preds were reduced to hulking juggernauts, without any of the samurai-cool evident in the first films.

That said, the CG work in AVP is most impressive. I literally got a chill seeking the Alien Queen on a full-on sprint out in the snow. Also, the design elements of the Predator armour was pretty sweet.

Just my thoughts.

Scott
