Here's the original,

As you can see the upper shoulders have already some nice detail sculpted into them.

One of the FT people posted the following suggestions for additional paint apps on their thread at TFW to see what people thought,

Gold shoulder stripes

Silver shoulder stripes

I don't normally get too concerned with small details but I think that either option detracts from the clean, "less is more" G1 aesthetic particularly for the cartoon color scheme.

It's like they're trying to add extra detail just for the sake of it and I think if FT want to do that they should include a sticker sheet and give people the option to do it that way.

Thanks for the pics buddy.

See, I don't think either option detracts much at all. But on the other hand, I don't think it adds anything to it either.

If I had to pick, I'd go silver, but neither paint app is needed whatsoever.

I kind of have to agree with Mr Prime here & to me it's not too big of a deal.
It looks awesome without but it still looks fantastic to me with either of them...silver would be my preference as it's almost like they aren't coloured but IMO it's definitely not a deal breaker & I'll still be having him no matter what they decide :)

On the hunt for MP-8 and also MP 15 + 16 since I kinda give up on getting the Hasbro ver, and all of my MP are Takaras now.

Is this a good deal:

That seems pretty good to me.
If the Re-issue comes to TRU in the end then I'd expect about $100 & packaging that's not as nice, worse colours & what looks like cheaper plastics.

IMO Takara all the way.

See, I don't think it was a mistake. It's too BIG a mistake; it had to be deliberate.

My wacky theory? Most of the early Decepticons were blue and or purple. They liked the name Rumble better (because he, you know, rumbles with his piledrivers; and they were only going to use one tape-person for a while, because Frenzy doesn't show up until quite a bit later), but the red looked too much like an Autobot, so they changed it.

As a result, I'm a "Rumble is blue" guy. :)

So, finally getting around to watching the Japanese Headmasters... on episode three now, before hitting the sack. WOW, so much better than the US story... or most of seasons two and three, even.

Nice to see Prowl was alive, and some of the other season one characters active. Saw the epic final battle between Blaster and Soundwave, etc... I could REALLY see MP figures of Blaster, Hot Rod, Sixshot, and maybe even Arcee, depending on how popular this season was in Japan...

Not a bad idea, except it dosnt take into account how much of a screw up sunbow was.
Pretty sure somebody just derped.

that said, I love how idw handled it. Even they don't know who is who anymore, becuase everyone confuses them.

Oh yeah? lol, that's pretty good. :)

Saw another guy who's arms fell off the Takara reissue. More verification that the mold is shot.

Good news is the Hasbro mold has only been run once... though a larger run.

Looks like they left off the extra paint apps off the upper arms, and the white triangles on the legs that made the hasbro robot mode different.

Funny thing is you can see the paint apps on the box for the robot mode, but it's not on the figure!

Skimp skimp and save. Hustle for them dollas :d

More than likely they just used the old stock photos. That whole 'product may appear different than what is shown' always saves face.

Fair enough, maybe I'm being extra picky because of the price or something, but if you look at Grimlock he doesn't have any paint apps on his shoulders so I'd prefer Slag to be the same so there's a consistency with how each Dinobot looks.

When I finally do get around to reading the Marvel run, I might change my mind, though. :)

Pretty sure they use the same mold...

Pretty sure it's a different one. They don't take the teeth out and slot in new ones on the same mold.

They knew from past smaller Grimlock releases that they would have to be produced this way, I do not see why they wouldn't have incorporated both versions into the die sets, I just can't see them double dipping the entire model for small cosmetic changes.

The shark (Skybite) is from the Robots in Disguise anime-esque series from... I want to say '99 or 2000 or so? I remember I was still in university. Didn't watch it, as I thought it was horrible, but the toys and character designs were really good.

The other is Roadbuster. G1, but never in the cartoon. I am guessing this is an IDW look maybe?

Right on all counts.

Have a question for all of you who frequent here and the numerous TF boards. I consider myself a transformers MP newbie, so I dunno much. But from my experience of collecting HT, AJ sneakers etc knock offs are usually frowned / looked down upon. However, over the past few days as I read and talked to a few of the transformers collectors, it seems they are quite popular?

A few of my friends even bought them, since they said that the quality is 95% like the original while only costing 1/3rd of the price. What are your thoughts on this?

I bought a Red Alert KO and apparently got the dumbest seller on Ebay, he literally shipped it from China in the art box, with no other packaging around it. So mine arrived smashed box wheels stuck up in the frame and top pressed in a little. In my mind I know this could happen with a crappy seller even if you paid full price, but it was my first KO and was my last. If you look at Rocket Punch Army vids, they do nice comparisons and their KOs look very nice. If there was a known dependable seller, I'd probably grab another one to try out.

So you mean the KO are pretty good?

Does the box art even matter, since its a KO anyways :lol

Molds are apparently incredibly expensive. I would assume small changes like that wouldn't require an entire new mold - probably just a much smaller one for the part that needed to be changed, or some kind of alteration technique...

I've bought some of the World's Smallest Transformers, and some TFs at the Dollar Store that were obvious KOs, but that was years back. In general I don't think there's a real difference between buying one or the other, from an ethical standpoint. I do think Transformers collectors have more fully embraced the idea of supporting unlicensed work though, with all the 3rd party stuff dominating the market nowadays. As a result, I think you'll find less opposition to supporting KOs than you will if you talk about it with 1/6 scale collectors.

They look really good in the video reviews on youtube from varous collectors and I think a couple people here think they're just as good or almost as good. My point about it being shipped in the art box only and not a shipping box, was the fact that my Red Alert got smashed, not just the box, there was literally no shipping box, they just shipped him in a large envelope ... ie. the bigger problem than the quality of the model itself seemed to be (from my experience anyway) finding someone who actually is a good seller. Unfortunately, I don't know if they're available besides from random overseas Ebay vendors.

transformers are a weird beast when it comes to unofficial product.

LEGALY, it's worth noting that hasbro and takara only hold design pattons, and copywrite protections on names, but do not have "likeness rights"

This opens the pandoras box of allowing other companies to make an original product that LOOKS and is OBVIOUSLY designed to be a take on Optimus prime, but so long as they call him " RED TRUCK COMMANDER" or something similarly stupid, they're in the clear. generaly these companies try to fill voids and make characters the official makers are skipping. Combiners/Gesaults are the big thing right now.

Full on knock-offs are a different matter. and there are ALOT of them, especialy of hard to find figures, and convention exclusives. MANY of these knock offs are of comparable quality to official product, so it's "good enough" if someoen wants one for a more affordable price.

it's also worth noting that there is no deception when it comes to thrid party and KO transfortmers. they are generaly labeld and sold as such, unlike with 1/6th product where there is generaly a level of deception going on.
