I know what you mean, I keep looking at the pictures & just something not quite right.

Looks good but I think it needs some work...just no idea where lol

From the knee down is what bothers me. I didn't mind it for ManiaKing, but for a "Masterpiece", it needs to look better than that.

^ This.

From the waist down it looks like something that belongs with the other lines.

That seems to be a trend with the "Masterpiece-style" 3rd party figures; they put a lot of effort into the head and torso, and the rest is just feels like anything-goes.

One can complain about hip-flaps or skewed proportions on the Takara-Tomy Masterpiece figures, but one thing that's always consistent is the aesthetic from head to toe.

Hasbro Masterpiece Starscream

Received my Hasbro Masterpiece Starscream from Toys R Us on Friday. In the plus column, he looks great. I previously owned and sold the Walmart MP-03 version and this is a huge step up; he no longer has parts falling off him constantly. I love the headsculpt and the spring-loaded sides are pretty clever. And Soundwave is now no longer my lone Masterpiece Decepticon.

In the minus column, not gonna lie: this is hands-down the weakest Masterpiece mold in MP-10-and-on series. While most figures' transformations are enjoyable, Starscream's is truly joyless. Transforming him is just work. Articulation and posability are garbage compared to other figures: no waist articulation, shoulder ratchets are so tight that rotating them causes the torso to come undone, fingers are unnecessarily over-articulated, and the legs are all but worthless. They really should have re-engineered everything from the waist down when they retooled the MP-03 mold; very little articulation in the hips, his legs feel too close together when standing upright, his knee joints are far too tight, and his feet have no ankle pivots (so any attempt at a dynamic pose means one foot off the ground like in my photo above). That, and all of the wing kibble just causes him to get in the way of himself.

As I said, he looks great so I'm happy to have him on my shelf for a mere $59, but I really hope they revisit Starscream down the road and just start from scratch.

It's a nice Galvatron toy, but not a Masterpiece.

Whoever's designing DX09's figures seems to be stuck between different aesthetics and it's preventing them from joining Fans Toys, Badcube, XTransbots and MMC as one of the 3rd parties that really get what MP figures should look like.

Here's some of the newest pics of MMC's Mirage,

With official Autobots,

That was my first reaction as well but now I just feel like they're doing their own thing. Much like how much MMC's stuff doesn't really fit in with the official CHUG-CW aesthetic but is done in similar scale. DX9 is just doing a Leader based scale of updated designs. It's not for me at the moment but I think it's cool they're doing something different and all of their figures (Astrotrain, Rodimus, and Galvatron) go well together.

Leader based scale + 1 carbot :wink1:

If DX9 are doing their own thing, that's fair enough, I like several things on each of their releases so far, they just don't fit in with my display.

You are not kidding. Some of these 3P companies really like exaggerating a bit.

Just look at this thing:

Jeez.

Congrats on Starscream, glad it didn't have any issues.

That thing looks like one of those cheap boardwalk knockoffs you would find.

Yeah.. I think maketoys kinda shot themselves in the foot with that one.

It's an instance where the design looks cool on paper, but putting it into 3D just doesn't work.
I can only imagine the QC nightmare it will be too.

Their version of Metroplex was cool, though I passed pretty quickly - this thing is an eyesore. But as with all TF merch, somebody will love it. TF fans will buy anything :D

Hope it doesn't kill their mega city line though.

The gold paint on that galvatron looks cheap - wonder if clear orange plastic is that hard to find?

I've got both "Grenadiers" in my Pile of Loot at BBTS. I'm still struggling with myself over which one to keep. More cartoon accurate vs. more attractive on the display, and the closer representation of my old toy. . .
