While I like the overall theme, a lot of the incongruities are starting to irritate me.
1.) The various writers cannot seem to decide whether this is "Hulk Smash" or "Smart" Hulk. In one issue, he's lecturing the Warbound about how the Iron Man robots cannot be Stark because they are not talking. The next issue by another writer has him issuing virtually no dialogue other than "argh".
2.) Couldn't Gage have done a little research before taking the WWH:X-Men writing gig? I don't have enough space to discuss all the problems, but let's look at the major ones: Hulk knows all about the New X-men (X-Academy students), even lecturing them about their powers - i.e. see Rockslide fight - even though they did NOTHING before Hulk was shot into space to draw his or Banner's attention. Are we to believe that Hulk managed to gather data on every super/mutant/magical being - even the minor ones - while he headed towards Earth? Able to kick their asses? Sure. But, unless he's managed to gain telepathic powers on Sakaar, it makes no sense that he knows EVERYTHING. Speaking of mental powers, all it takes is "rage deflection" to keep Xavier and Emma from being able to enter Hulk's mind?!? I'm sorry, but that's just stupid. Now, I know that they had to develop some way to keep the mentalists in the Marvel Universe from simply putting the Hulk and Crew to sleep - would have been a short fight otherwise. However, this idea that his rage is too strong for Xavier to enter his mind is just silly. Speaking of Gage not understanding Xavier ... so Emma can block his powers now? The most power telepath in the known universe?!? Well, I could almost have accepted that as a story McGuffen. But to give the Stepford Cuckoos that same ability (the 3 blonde triplets ... well, quintuplets, but the other 2 are dead) is down right insulting. I will stop now as my own "rage deflection" is growing, but WWH: X-men is weak on every level and brings the whole story down a notch. Oh, one more - so Hulk is punishing Xavier for just being willing to shoot him into space? So, is he going to go kill the millions of other humans that would have voted the same damn thing if given a choice? I can live with him wanting revenge on the rest of the Illuminati. However, Xavier had nothing to do with him being shoot into space and then his world being destroyed. So, it makes no sense to spend all that energy to "punish" him.
3.) The writers have reduced the Warbound to simple intergalactic rent-a-cops. These characters were the best part of Planet Hulk ... they brought amazing characterization to the story and really helped bring out the strong points in the Hulks interactions. I know they want to make Hulk look "bad-ass", but doing so at the detriment of his team is wrong.
4.) Frontline - actually, I have little to no problems with this book. It's done well - definitely the best of the bunch.
It may seem like I totally hate WWH from this rant. But, that's not true. I am enjoying the overall story and thematic elements. It's just that the weak parts are keeping this from being a strong mini-series. Onslaught/Heroes Reborn bad? No. But that's not setting the bar very high. Sigh ...
