i suppose it's because back then Will Ferrell and co were fairly unknown as comedy actors

Not in the U.S., I rememeber seeing the trailer for the first in a theatre and that voice over about suits that made Sinatra look like a hobo and thinking omg that's going to be amazing. Will was huge by the time he left Saturday Night Live as he was pretty much the Bill Murray of that era. He had alot of reoccuring characters like the high school music teacher and James Lipton and played President Bush weekly. Plus he already had a few roles based on SNL characters like Night at the Roxburry and than Old School really cemented him as a movie actor. TBH SNL never recovered from him leaving. He was also in Elf before Anchorman which got a huge reception here which was strange to me because it was way less funny than the other stuff he usually did.
