I don't smoke, do drugs or drink. I have no desire to and think they are a huge waste of money. It doesn't bother me that other choose to.

I do have a glass of wine here and there with the wife. Can't stand beer. Any kind of beer. Nasty stuff.

Well, I think addiction is a different issue than whether or not a drug is being used for the purposes of medical treatment or pleasure. Your body starts to crave it, and will not function well without it, which is a different kind of thing in my mind. I had a form of addiction to migraine meds I was taking awhile back, where I would get more headaches just because the body wanted that drug. I got no pleasure from it beyond reducing the pain of the headache. And I wouldn't consider that recreational use.

Thats the same thing that happens with something like a non prescription opiate though, and people "self medicating". I personally don't see much a differance because you payed taxes on your drugs and got them from a licensed dealer. It all comes back to you and the choice you make on how to use it. It's no safer one way or another. You could argue for some having what amounts to a medical professional's blessing to do it could make it far worse.

"Hey I haven't seen you in a while how ya been."

"Oh I quit smoking."

"So you stopped buying weed but you still want to smoke mine."

The only thing I do straight edge, is listen to FUGAZI and CANCER BATS.

I enjoy beer, but not the excess. My father is 6 years sober in AA. I don't and won't judge anyone else's desire to be sober, or to enjoy the odd luxury of chemical enhancement now and then.

Given the remarkable similarities to Christian Science, consuming a controlled substance would definitely remove you from a contender for this definition of "straight-edge."

This has NOTHING to do with RELIGION AT ALL WTF! :monkey4 :monkey4

this is a movement started by punks, has nothing to do with religious morals either, just PUNK!

straight edge is a Movement started in 1981 by D.C. Hardcore band, Minor Threat. Drawn from the two songs "Out of Step" and "Straightedge", in which in the former, they emphasize the values of "Don't drink! Don't smoke! Don't f___!" which means no drugs, alcohol, or promiscuous sex. The movement grew in the hardcore scene as it stood at the time as a stark contrast to the drug and beer-heavy punk 'scenes' of the time. It is still kept on today, although a militaristic and violent branch of straightedge known as 'hardliner' has become more prevalent in some circles, in addition to straightedge's marriage to veganism in others. There are still many out there that believe in real straightedge though, regardless if there're 'x's on their hands or not. It has also been looked down upon by many people as another brand of conformity nowadays

Straight edge emerged amid the mid-'80s hardcore punk scene, in part as a reaction against the perceived "jock" element of the developing scene

The term was coined by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat in their song "Straight Edge"

Please Nam watch this vid and look at the lyrics, that really shows what straight edge is about,

straight edge is pretty much for hardcore kids to not do bad things to themselves

Never heard the term straight-edgers before. But...whatever.

I don't choose to put too many limits on myself as far what I try for fun. Of course, snuf films and train-wrestling are out of the question.

Tried meth...the fall was not worth the ride, to me. I drink, I don't get hangovers...a large drink of water and a couple of Excedrine before going to sleep after drinking work miracles on that front...but I don't do that all that often just because doing the same old thing too many times too quickly gets old fast for me. I have tried marijuana...OK...many times...the only reason I don't do that is because it is illegal and I have too much to lose. The day it becomes legal, I'll do it.

But there is also a lot of fun to be had with non-mind altering substance activities as well. Hiking is great. Swimming, mountain biking, Sports like football, basketball, baseball...all fun. Playing boardgames with my kids...great times. Working in the yard...I'm for it. Hunting...I am cool with killing ____ that it is legal to kill.

And at the same time, there are non mind altering substance activities that I don't like and skateboarding comes to mind right away. I suck at it. It hurts too much because I suck at it. I do not see any benefit from going through the pain I would need to getting good at it...so I don't do it. Scuba diving...tried it...liked it...went quite a ways with it...but lost interest...so I don't do it any more.

I see a reason for some who have no self control to be kept from activities that have dangerous aspects if there is a risk of hurting people besides themselves. But I see no reason for the average person to overly limit themselves from variety other than whether they enjoy the experience or not.

As a skateboarder, I agree with you about the pain part. Nothings worse then trying a trick and wrecking your nuts with the board or the rail :lol But man, when you finally nail that trick youve been working on, its so satisfying! All that pain and hard work paid off and it feels great! I guess you could relate it to a pre order, you pre order an item and wait and wait and wait but when you are finally taking it out of the box and putting it up on your shelf to admire its beauty, its so satisfying!

Darth Cruel, allow me to ask, if it becomes legal, what's the reason you would do marijuana? Is it purely for the feeling, doing it just to do it or maybe to join in with friends who do it? I'm curious to see the reason.

life is short. no thank you.

I realize that some people totally get off on that like I do on some of my activities. But a successful fakie ollie or a backside railslide just do nothing for me. And I am not hitting on boarders. I completely understand how much talent and ability it takes to do many of the tricks and they are badass for it. I just don't get the same rush over nailing the tricks.

Been an Addictions and Mental Health Therapist for last decade. e.g. Group based and individual counseling.

I come from a very Irish family background where drugs and alcohol are an ever present and easily accessible.

I don't consider myself a recovering alcoholic or a straight edge at all....but through osmosis and exposure....the appeal of taking any psycho-active substance is something I unconsciously avoid.

I just know drinking my face off has never served me for the better. :lol
