Anything in excess is bad for you, no matter what it is. I wish I had the discpline it takes to be a vegetarian. I do love veggies, fruits, etc. but I still like alittle meat. I try not to go overboard, but BBQ is just too yummy!
Although it is true that almost anything in excess is bad for you, like too much oxygen causing hyperventilation. There ARE however, some things which are toxic to the body in ANY amount. ANY amount of alcohol will destroy brain, heart, liver and kidney cells. The more you drink, the more that are killed. The human body is harmed by animal growth hormones, as well. Animal products aren't the only things that people consume that are bad for them, but it is important to note that a so called "moderate" amount of anything bad will STILL cause damage. People use this term "everything in moderation" as if somehow if a bad thing is only taken in a little bit, the body will be magically protected from ALL harm that that thing can cause. Totally untrue, but it's the rationalization that people use to consume every unhealthy thing that they feel like consuming.
There was a NOVA program that explained that everything you put into your body over your whole life will affect your epigenetics. Every experience that you have will also affect your epigenetics. Epigenes turn genes on or off, to determine the genetic expression of human beings, which means what genetics are expressed. Therefore, all of your health habits will affect the genetics of your descendants, most significantly, your grandchildren. Every drink of alcohol, puff of cigarettes, or consumption of animal products will affect the genetics of your descendants. The fact is that one's personal health habits are a big responsibility, especially if you are going to have children.
People DO eat way too much meat in Western countries. The salty sweet taste of meat is addictive. Meat used to represent wealth hundreds of years ago, which is what eating high on the hog is about. Only the very rich could afford meat every day, and as a result of the status of animal products, only the very rich people had serious disease like heart attacks and gout, while the common people, although poorer, actually were generally much healthier.
As far as variety is concerned, in fact, there are MANY more varieties of plant foods in the world than there are animals. How many people eat spelt, kamut, amaranth, or quinoa, let alone have even heard of these grains? They are all quite tasty. Nutritional expert Gary Null, who eats a vegan diet except he eats honey as well, says that he has never eaten the same meal twice, at least not in decades. He is always formulating new meals, experimenting in the kitchen. There is much much more variety in a vegetarian diet than in a meat based diet. With all of the spices and seasonings there are, with the variety of edible plants in the world, the only limit to the variety of vegetarian dishes, and the great flavors that they have is your creativity and imagination.
If people only ate fish like Salmon 2-3 times a week, and ate enough fruits and vegetables, avoided bad habits like drinking and smoking, as well as engage in regular, moderate aerobic exercise, for 45 minutes or more a day, they probably would live for 100 years without ever having to worry about a heart attack, stroke, or arthritis, and risk of getting cancer would be much reduced.
As far as BBQ, be aware that charcoal grilling can cause nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic.
