Most govt people will still get paid. They will get paid retroactively when the govt opens back up. That's why this whole thing is stupid in a way. The same thing happened back in '95 when the govt shut down.

Congress has to vote and approve the back pay for non-essential personnel.....and in today's fiscal climate, that is far from a guarantee.

The military and other essential personnel will get back pay....because they have to come in and work regardless of the budget situation.

My brother is considered essential personel so he still has to show up for work. He is not too happy about not getting paid since he's getting married soon and he needs to save up.
I hope congress can get their greedy heads out of their ***** and resolve this issue. This is unacceptable.

Sorry to hear about this for you guys who work for the feds. But to put it in perspective, state government employees have been experiencing furloughs of various sorts for awhile now.

Why would they lay themselves off if the "poeple" are just gonna vote them in anyways? We are the ones who have to do it but most people can't be bothered.

Very true..but I have a feeling that they will approve the back pay. They don't want to make a bad situation worse.

:exactly:

Americans have become lazy and self-absorbed. We won't acknowledge a problem unless it's biting us in the ass, and even then we expect someone else to fix it for us.

And the funny (sad) thing in all of this is that they are deadlocked over the funding of Planned Parenthood. The Republicans want to take away all of it's money, while the Democrats want to keep the current funding levels. Please don't turn this into a Red vs. Blue State thing...we know where they all end up. I'm just pointing out that the entire govt budget..all those billions of dollars are being help up by this one small thing.

Guys, things are getting a bit heated here. Chill.

This thread is a good one - do not get it closed because you want to argue politics. :nono

thats not a guarantee though. military personnel will since they will esentially be working without getting paid but civilian federal employees are gonna be told to stay at home.

Military workers will still get paid. As will all essential govt workers. Even though my wife is Homeland Security, she isn't essential. Not allowed to use work servers, use work blackberry or do anything related to work during the shutdown.

Best of luck to fed employees. I'm a state employee so I know the routine to some extent. Everyone thinks that working for the government is a no stress job and that we should consider ourselves lucky to even have a job and to that I just roll my eyes.

At least in the corporate world if you were a kick ass better than average employee you could march over to your boss and ask for more than what the ******* sitting next to you gets.

Doesn't work that way in the government. I can either accept what I get or quit. Its useless to even ask for a raise no matter how many positive employee reviews I get, each individual employee is tied to each other. Its like being in a union for all the wrong reasons without getting the positive reasons.

I'm done, I apologize for allowing myself to get sucked into that by him. After looking back through the guy sucked me into one on the NFL thread awhile back' too. I just can't stand being attacked and have my quotes twisted around to make me out to be some heartless prick like that. Again, sorry, and I hope mine and some other person's actions don't get this closed.

Below is a copy of an e-mail my wife sent me. It only helps military service members, I'm sorry, but I hope at least some people might be able to get some help from it.

Financial Difficulties Caused by the Disruption of Pay Due to the Federal Government Shutdown

"Under section 523 of title 50 App, United States Code (The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act), if a Servicemember on active duty is unable to perform an obligation arising under a contract (for example, cannot make an automobile, rent, or mortgage payment), and is charged a late fee or other similar penalty as a result, then a court may reduce or waive that fee if the ability to pay was materially affected by such military service.

"If a Servicemember misses a payment because of pay disruptions caused by the shutdown of the federal government, then this section should provide relief. Servicemembers should contact their lenders or the other party to their contract or obligation and request relief under this section.

"See your local legal assistance attorney if you cannot get the matter resolved. You can find the closest legal assistance office at https://legalassistance.law.af.mil/content/locator.php ."

Tell me about it. I've been a state employee for almost 13 years now.
