Are most 12 inch SS Lines Dead?

I don't know about dead...in a coma maybe...but not dead yet. We did get 5 new Bonds last year, and we're all holding our collective breath waiting for the Craig Bond.

This is why I hope some other companies will step up and fill the void. If Sideshow isn't going to commit 100% to a license I wish they would leave it for someone else. I have spent lots of money on SS 12 inch figures, but it's disappointing when lines are started and never finished. Most companies don't have the money or motivation to try and compete with two juggernauts like LOTR or SW, but going the extra mile to make that extra character in the line (or take the quality up a notch - Brent anyone?) may be supported by collectors. I know I would be willing to support other companies, if the properties are right.

Not really, just 5 old figures in new outfits ala the Hasbro repaints.

We all know you are waiting in anticipation of the definitive 12" Bond, Daniel Craig.:lol

Well I can't argue with that, although I am really happy to be getting the Connery and Moore outfits. Plus having Brosnan in a suit will be nice. The other two are meh, but I had to get the complete set.

I think most of those lines are dead. :(

The honest truth is that "most" of these lines had figures that just didn't sell. I know that several of the board members here are religiously faithful to some of these particular lines and that's fine but overall "most" of these lines were a failure. The figures just didn't sell enough to justify any more figures.

It's sad but in reality SS is in the business to make money so it only makes sense for them to concentrate on the lines that do sell well. Why develop a figure that can't sell enough pieces to justify the cost of making the figure in the first place.

A few lines like the modern horror line still sells very well yet there hasn't been any new figures announced. Maybe SS is waiting till Toy Fair to announce something new?

I'm still holding out hope that I'll get my Ygor figure some day but I doubt it.:monkey2

Its feast or famine it seems. Either a line gets flooded with too many figures too soon [like Planet of the Apes] or you wait forever for a figure to come out in a series [Giles, anyone?] or you hear "the likeness isn't available" for a key character [Colin Clive].
I've never heard why we can't get Ygor or Maleva. Certainly I would expect them to be more popular than the Wolfman character of "Bela".
Or there's the ever popular rehashing of the same character [Bonds, Taylors, Buffys, etc..]
I'm not saying Sideshow should have passed on Star Wars, we know what happened to Mego when they did just that, but I don't think they'd lose money by "finishing" off a few of the older lines before pronouncing them dead. Lots of folks were fans of the older lines, and while I'm sure the diehard LOTR and SW fanatics are thrilled by all the hoopla for their faves, it seems somewhat wrong to alienate [to some degree] the original customers. I like Star Wars and am picking up what I can of them, but I still long for other characters from older lines. It just feels like a void in the collection. Majestic and SFM are nice fillers, but being smaller companies, they have slower production than the bigger guys.
We all lost out when it appeared no one was awarded the 40th Trek license for 1:6. Wave 3 of the original BSG is long overdue as is wave 2 of SFM's Lost in Space. I know there are many behind the scenes happenings that cause such delays, and it can be good for the wallet, but its tough to wait so long for someone to make figures from a license you've wanted for years to have it take so long or die prematurely.
Anyway, I have to go feed my apes and build some heroes!! :monkey5

All the figures I have on order are either Star Wars, LotR, or the Dead. I'm a huge star wars fan, but I even want other lines made instead of a ton of Star Wars. The dead is a fun little, low cost, in-house project of Sideshow that I can see continuing easily. 1000 pieces or slightly lower seems to be the correct amount for any figure, 300 being WAY too low. Other lines have potential:

Bond - Craig and Goldfinger are easily good sellers. Line could die after they are made.

Uni Monsters- the really only NECESSARY figures left are Ygor and a Dr. Frank

X-Files - I'm statisfied with what we got, but a grey Alien could be a nice finisher

Highladner - lets face it, an Origns Kurgan is a must and most of us would buy one just to end the freaking Krusade

Live By the Sword - Viking, Knight, and others just waiting to be made.

Jason - the last Jason was from LAST Toy Fair! Sure they won't sell Freddy Vs Jason numbers, but Jason still sells well

While I love Sideshow's three 12 Figure lines they are doing now, I really miss these others that never got an official fare well. I know business is about making money and making what makes money, but any of this figures could sell at least 500 pieces like Krycek and Skinner, if not more. At this point I'd even settle for a Dr. Frankenstein that only resembles Clive or a novel interp version. If they slapped on the armor on the Mondern Kurgan head and body, it would be great at this point. Jason really would only need a new face, etc. etc. etc.

It does seem that the 12" lines aren't the focus that they once were. It's extremely disappointing for me, who came to Sideshow only for 12". However if a line isn't turning a profit or even breaking even, I can see why the company's resources might be better served in other endeavors.

But it would be foolish for HT or another company to take over the existing licenses, as SSC has already milked them as much as possible.

There's like a whole board full of people begging to be milked more.

Except when it comes to the 1/4 scale LOTR and Star Wars figures.

My nipples are sore and my chest is engorged and swollen. I need milking!!!

Add that to your painful explosive diarrhea, and you've had quite a day.

Aside from Star Wars and LOTR, Sideshow's just not a 1/6 company now. They'll drop a crumb every now and then like the T2 stuff, but they're more about the statues and high-end pieces these days. I imagine 1/6 will become even less of a focus for them in the future. I think they're more than willing to let HT and Medicom pick up the slack and just import their stuff.

I think that with such solid roots in the 1/6 world, they will never abandon it completely. But I definitely see a shift away from that in their priorities.

I only collect Sideshow's 1/6 stuff so if they get rid of them, they get rid of a LONG time customer. I just don't see it happening. The 1/6 Star Wars line has been their most sucessful thing since the hay-day of the Universal Monster 1/6 scale figures.
