So is a PS3 as good for playing movies as a stand alone player? I get the impression the PS3 is the way to go if getting into Blu-Ray.

The thing is will the PS3 as a stand alone player last longer than a normal BR player?

I would say they build PS3's to last longer then stand alone players. In the video game market the only profit is in the games most console systems are sold at a significant loss just to get them into people's homes. If you don't have a a working player you don't buy their $70 games. I recently bought 5 Blu-ray movies for $15-$17 a title so for every 1 video game they sell they have to sell anywhere from 2-5 movie titles.

hum........ Maybe this summer I'll pick up a PS3 then just for a BR player.

Thats actually my plan as well... now that there's a victor in the format war might as well get full use of my TV :rock

And to get a PS3 is just an added bonus.

The PS3 seems to be quite reliable and should last a long time. Plus really it's a good value, especially since the Blu-Ray players are going up in price. And since it's the main player it gets all the updates, and quick.

It's kinda weird though, for less than $200 there's a Blu-Ray Burner and HD-DVD drive on Newegg.com right now. Good value although it's not standalone, but I use my computer for movies and stuff anyway.

Yeah, bloody Sony! You buy their latest 'next-gen' console expecting nothing but top notch tech and what happens? You get the damn red rings of death!!! Over and over again!!!!! Bloody Japanese companies!!!

Yep, you just can't beat good old US corporate reliability!

Oh, wait a second...

I think it's funny people are saying "What did you expect?"

Gee, I dunno, how about getting what they said they would give us which was that prices would go down and not up? How long before disc prices go up as well? I have already stopped seeing some of the sales and 2 for 1's on BR disc's already.

I love BR, but I think this is pretty crappy.

Yeah, Sony, let's use the Laserdisc business model for player, software pricing and features instead of DVD/HD DVD. That'll work.

Morons. They actually win a format war (for once) and the first thing they do is point a gun squarely at their own feet. They remind me of the Republicans when they took over Congress for the first time in forever back in 1994. They don't know what to do now that they have control of an entire market. :lol

Considering they still have to compete with standard DVD's this really isn't a good move on Sony's behalf

Mine should last just as long since I don't play games on it.

Well, that's what I would think would be the case but never having used any of my systems that could play DVD's. I find one at the right price I'll probably get one since it may be the cheapest way to play for a while.

There is no way that they will raise software prices (movies or games). They won't raise the price on the PS3 either. Therefore, people who don't have Blu will have cheaper options available. Sony knows what they are doing, and has known for years.
