Agreed about him looking like Theodan. It's odd they made Gandalf look so old, he never looked that old, even in The Hobbit. The original sculpt is perfect, it's a shame they're not using that. Still, it's not a deal breaker since since the hat will shadow the face a bit and it's still a nice looking figure and one I think I will buy.

At least Sideshow got he widow's peak right.

It was not perfect. Eyes are better on the new one. Both have some flaws. It is a bit overdone in respect to wrinkles, and obviously the hairing influenced the way his hairline looks on the new sculpt.
The first version was not perfect, why people do not see it? It was more than we expected, but it does not mean perfect. Unfortunately I could not manipulate with the Photoshop well to show that.

I'd like to know also. Even if they wanted to go with the rooted hair, couldn't the facial sculpt still be spared?

I said "damn close to perfect" not that it was perfect, nothing is perfect. And personally I like the eyes on the original better so to each their own.

I personally think the original sculpt looks significantly better. While the added wrinkles make it look more realistic, it ages the character too much. I prefer the rooted hair, but the hairline is off both on the widow's peak and at the temples. That optically changes the shape of Gandalf's face. I would have been fine with the original sculpt with change-out sculpted and rooted hair. I don't know why companies don't do that.

I don't know anything about Asmus' process but I do know there were instances with SSC's Star Wars line where the license holder insisted on changes to the detriment of the sculpt ( more determined expressions, etc).

He's not that old looking in the film. Christopher Lee didn't look as old as this figure does.

I haven't seen them in awhile, and I'm actively trying to block them from memory, but I remember watching BoFA and thinking that Ian Mckellen looked significantly older in it than he did in LotR.

I think as long as some of the detail is lost in mass production, as is expected, he'll be pretty accurate. The biggest thing is that the hair line is off.

I think its a fantastic likeness, sometimes I think people forget, look at where this figure is for the price point and for Asmus where they are in comparison to some of their other sculpts.
Give them credit where credit is due.
