Yeah... Everything I buy in my state has a 9% sales tax slapped on it.

That said, we luck out with customs duties and tariffs since we don't pay those on most imported items.

If you are right, it's so strange how Americans don't pay tax on buying goods...
Anyway, enough whining, time to put out the cash :dunno

It's actually s **thouse that Europeans do. Australians don't get charged any duties or taxes on imported goods valued under a thousand dollars - but there are a lot of people in government looking at ways to implement an 'international online purchase' tax, and based on the UK model. Mutha****ers

I didn't mean that Americans don't pay tax; what I was pointing out was that UK prices tend to have the 20% VAT already added to the list price, whereas in the US the tax is added at checkout. At least that is how I understand it to work, I may be totally wrong.

Currently we don't pay taxes across state lines, but that will soon change.

Technically, I believe we still do its just that the seller/merchant doesn't have to charge or report them. We are on the honor system and of course almost nobdoy reports what they bought online and it is not inforced.

Just started last year in Nebraska. They now ask how much has been spent on ordered items and sales tax is then needed to be paid. Screw that.

They keep bringing it up here in Florida but at least up till now they haven't actually tried to collect them. Thank goodness.

I always taught that USA was strict when it comes to taxes... "Do not ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" and all that...
And that saying - "Only death and taxes are certin" - comes from America if I am not mistaken...

I don't really get this "volontary" tax payment method? It doesn't make sense - you should report any goods you buy and fill up a tax form for them? That sounds like a lot of unneccessary work for both you and public administration. Not to speak about the possibilities for missuse...

But, we are getting way off topic here, I apolagize for that.

Well taxes are pretty strict but they can be very complicated and the cross boarder taxing will require some way of tracking it. As of now, it will be hard for one state to know what another has sold. I'm sure they will figure it out.

As far as why things are more expensive in the UK, the shipping cost to get things into the UK is higher, for whatever reason. I've seen some really "out there" international locations, some that I have no idea where they are, but it just costs more to ship to the UK. So, as far as that's concerned, UK retailers are factoring that disproportionately higher shipping cost into their retail prices. . . but yes, VAT is also included in that price.

No need to appologize. Personnally I llike it when I learn random things about different countries. Since every State (and I believe every county/city at leasdt in Florida) have their own sales tax it becomes very difficult for a company to figure out what to charge in taxes and to report all those taxes. When selling across state lines really took off with the internet the tax enforcement was way behind and never caught up. While we do have all kinds of taxes here it is very difficult to start collecting a tax that wasn't collected before (whether it should have been or is a brand new tax doesn't matter).

On a side note I never knew how much customs and other charges the European collectors had to deal with until joining this forum. Silly me I just assumed it was all factored in to the shipping cost and was relatively close to our cost.

If you don't mind, I may give some further info regarding tax in EU.
European Union can be seen the same way as the USA. Different countries inside EU can be regarded as states in America. Every country has it's own VAT rate, and they can be quite different (they vary from 15 to 25%) - same as in USA. When buying goods inside the Union you are obliged to pay the VAT that applies in the country where you buy from, same as you were the native buyer. This is called "origin based VAT system". After the goods AND the VAT are payed, goods are shiped accross the border and they are then custom free, they get delivered to you without additional cost. To balance different VAT of all the countries, there is a fixed threshold that each seller can sell towards each country before he must register as a taxable person in this other country. This threshold is set at approxmately €35.000 (but I believe it also varies between countries). For example, if one collectable store located in UK makes sales during one year over €35.000 to buyers in Croatia, the next year it has to report in Croatian VAT system and pay VAT according to our rates when selling to Croatian buyers. At the moment Croatia has the highest VAT accross Europe (25%), so buying from other members makes sense.

This is a fairly just system, as far as paying VAT goes. I believe USA could work the same way if there is any real will in the legistlation to solve this problem you have now.
Croatia just become a member of EU last year, so now I can order from EU without any additional custom charges. But, if I order from outside EU (like I was doing up until last year), then the costs are insane, I pay my own VAT (25%) on the price AND on the shipping, and I also have to pay another about 5% for administration and handling.

So now, I order only from EU (with some minor exceptions).

Interseting. That's probably similar to the way it is supposed to work in the States except the taxes are supposed to be charged in the destination State not the retail State (not to sure why it is that way).

I learned after shipping my first item to a forum member overseas that it is always best to ask them how to fill out the custom forms because even though you mean well you might end up making them pay more in customs than they paid for the item. When I ship within the states I normally insurse the full replacement cost since all it costs is maybe a dollar or two more to do but over seas that could cost $50-$100 in custom fees.

When it comes to filling a customs form it's always a gamble.
It depends on the customs officer who gets to handle your case. Sometimes they just take the given price without question, but if they have a bad day they can go check the real price online and then take the taxation basis from whichever price they find online (which can be crazy as you can imagine). Or, in most cases when they are doubtful of the sellers price, they just ask you to get the proof of purchase (ebay transaction number, paypal reciept...). And they can be quite strict about that, if you try to trick them you can get in all kinds of trouble.

Something is very, very wrong here. What happened to this guy? My most wanted new LOTR figure has vanished from delivery and discussion.

Is Asmus correcting the body? Are they fixing the low-hanging shoulder wart? What is happening here?

vanished from delivery? I hope not.

I have been debating about looking for some place other than bbts to get him since I have been waiting along time with no sign of him. Does anybody know of any reliable dealer that has these in stock?
