Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Yeah, I've started to use my other hand to shield my work area from splatter. :lol

Toothpick might work, but you lose the random chaos of actual natural splatter effect... and it might kill the overall look.

And Brown in blood mix is key, since real life blood is more brown than red.

Hey thanks for the tips, man. Guess it's time to hang up some butcher's paper and get my Dead figures looking right :lol :whip

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Please use Testors WATER-BASED Model Master Acryl Acrylics!
They work on almost all plastics. Clean the paint off that you used, probably with thinner, then wash it well, then use the right acrylic paints and you'll get what you want. Trust me. :rock

My local hobby store does not carry the water based type. Do you guys know of any online places I can get them from?

Josh, when I splatter one of my backdrops, I take a big sheet of poster board and using my compass, I make a circular hole in the board and use the toothbrush flicking method. It works pretty well in controlling the blast zone.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

sorry to be too bothersome, but are there any other ways to make head casts?
not that the ideas aren't good, i only have three brands possibilities, and i would like to look at more, soooooooo if you all dont mind...what's the best way to make a cast with an exact likeness?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

never mind, i just watched some smooth-on vids on their site...WOW!!!!
i have one question: after you make a cast of something, can you change it around a bit, in other words, will it be soft to resculpt a bit?
*i.e. change a smile into a frown*

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

No, you don't want to pull a cast from a mold before the resin cures or it will deform.
Best way would be to make a cast, the next day sand off the mouth (in this case) and resculpt it with some sculpey, and put it in the oven for an hour or so and let it cool INSIDE the oven to prevent cracking.
Then make your new mold and cast it.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

to cast a head, how would i get the smooth-on stuff, or any other product into the neck.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

If you mean to create the opening that the neck stem goes into to mount the head, that has to be dremeled out.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

Hey Villiansfan,
Check out this link here. This has a tutorial on how to create a mold with a neck post opening.
I haven't done this myself, cause I prefer the ease of a single split glove mold. But it seems like what you need if you don't have a dremel!
Good Luck!
By the way, I love the smooth on stuff. I use the Oomo 25 for the molds and the smooth cast.

how do you make the neck in your own casts?

would it be possible to fill the original head's neck w/the cast mix, take it out, and attatch it to a dremmel, and drill that shape into the new cast head?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

any other ways to include a neck in a cast?

also, which smooth-on is the best one to buy?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

please, please...which version of smooth-on is the best one to buy to make good casts, and how can you incorporate a neck in your cast?

i was going to get the brush on starter kit, but i'm really not completely sure...so can someone tell me their favorite version of smooth-on?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I like smooth cast 300 but honestly, buy yourself a dremel or some other rotary tool. You're going to need to to remove resin build up and stuff.
