Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I like smooth cast 300 but honestly, buy yourself a dremel or some other rotary tool. You're going to need to to remove resin build up and stuff.

yea...i kinda figured that i would need a dremmel, but how would i use it, and how would i dremmel out the shape of the neck?

also, do you use any clay in the process?

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

No, no clay.

The Dremel comes with several bits. I drill a central guide whole and then use a wider bit in a circular motion to drill out the shape I want. I also hook up my vacuum cleaner with the hose attachment while I'm doing it and keep it right there so it sucks the dust in as soon as it gets spit out.
Once you get one, you'll figure it out pretty quickly.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

tell me if this would work: fill the original neck with that plastic stuff from smooth-on, let it harden, and attatch that part to the dremmel, and use the cast of the neck to dremmel into the cast of the head.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

I know you all are on the subject of the head castings and such, but I wanted to let you all know that I used a Tamiya weathering stick this week for the first time and they work great!!! I picked up the mud stick and it does a great job for dirtying up not only plastics but also clothing.

Yep. I LIVE by those things. :rock

I've been eyeing them for a while but I was always a little apprehensive because they say for plastics only. I read a review the other day on another site and the guy said they work on fabric. I've got to say I've been missing out!

Can you explain what they are? I've never heard of these.

Josh, could you repost the Skin Tutorial pics again? Only 2 steps work....

They are weathering sticks. Its a water based "crayon" I guess you could call it. Almost acts like lipstick or chap stick when you rub it on. It just eliminates the need to mix up acrylics, not to mention it stays smooth on the clothing rather than hardening it like paints do. Warning, its pretty easy to remove.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

hey anybody
i'm really wanting to repaint some thing for my HT figures but i have some questions:

1. what's a good paint to use on rubber?
i want to repaint the Bat Symbol and the boots on my HT Original Suit Batman
i need a paint that has a nice gloss to it, but not overdone, black paint to be exact
paint that won't crack as the rubber stretches or destroy the rubber

2. i want to paint my HT Joker gloves more purple but i want it to also have a subtle gloss
the kind you have on real leather gloves
i asked my girlfriend since she loves painting and she said acrylics with elmers glue will add a nice gloss
the more glue, the more shiny it is
i'm wondering if there maybe another method or a special type of paint to use
i also plan to use that gloss effect on my Original Suit Batman gauntlets, since they were shiny in the film
also going to use the gloss effect on my BR Joker hair, to give it that sweaty hair effect

thanks

I'm going to do a new one... the old one is really wrong, doesn't give the best results. My methods have changed a LOT. :lol

I'll post something soon for you guys. :banana

Honestly, I haven't found ANY paint that works on rubber. But very thinly painted watered down acrylic will stay for a good while unless you rub it off.

As for gloss... you should either get a spray gloss sealer or Brush on gloss from Model Master. And always get the acrylics.

Ahh! thanks I'll keep a look out for them.:joy

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

maybe that's what HT used
their Dark Knight suit has paint on it and it doesn't crack but people have posted stating that their paint rubbed off so they reapplied it

i'll look it up
i need to be careful with the gloss
since some places of the gauntlets are glossy, other parts are not
the gloss should be easy for the hair and gloves though

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

You can use Monster Makers Latex Mask paint. It does a real good jod and is flexible.

Re: ATTENTION all Custom Artists!!

any other ways to include a neck in a cast?

also, which smooth-on is the best one to buy?

Instead of drilling out a neck post, another option would be to slush cast your head instead of filling the whole mold with the liquid plastic.
Just pour about a 1/4 of plastic into the mold and "work" the liquid around the mold until it sets up.
Get about 1/8" thickness around the neck area so that it would be able to fit over the neck post.
On a side note if you are getting into this hobby a dremel is still a must have!

i'll try that too
makes sense, as the latex would be able to stretch along with the rubber
i'll test it out to make sure it doesn't destroy rubber
