well, i'm no expert but if you multiply 8 (inches, as in your figure) by 9 you get 72, then divide by 12 that's 6. so if the character is about 6ft that means the scale of your figure is 1:9. make sense?

Yep, might be correct. Thanks for the help.

hope it helped. 6ft sounds about right. so in that case you should be able to work out the paintings ok, yeah?

Hi - can anyone recommend a 1/6 scale all black tightfitting jumpsuit/ divers suit/ body stocking type thing? I've had a look on ebay but I know nothing about military figures - which is where I assume you'd find such an item.

I want it because I'm sick of not being able to pose my HT OC Batman in extreme poses for fear of ripping the suit and would like to create a custom Batman body on which the superb cowl, boots, gauntlets etc could go, and which I could pose in any way I wanted. I may also put a yellow Batman logo on his chest.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

For custommikey and the other great sculptors and painters here..

Do you guys have any art background?

Hey guys, can I be a great sculptor and painter without attending any art class or without having any Art Degree?

What books do you recommend I get for self study?

Or do you recommend I get an art degree instead?

I can only speak for myself. I did take art classes at Uni & through high school but none of it seems to really apply with this hobby.

I've been painting since 4 yrs (encouraging parents) & have my 14yr old & 6 yr old nieces bashing 1/6 customs as well.

All I can say is get the stuff you need & go ahead. I still make mistakes but learn something from everyone of them.

Essential for painting:
-quality airbrush
-chalk pastels (not oils)
-good quality acrylic paint
-2 part epoxy putty (Tamiya or even plumbers putty)
-good paint brushes
-Testors dull coat (#1260)

All you need to really do is study your subject extensively prior to painting.

I teach my nieces to look at a subject & break the skin tones down to colors. Biggest mistake is just painting. You shouldn't "just" do anything.

Look at your own face in a mirror. But just look at the different colors, not as a whole. Apply this system to 1/6 painting.

I can't offer to much on sculpting, I get hand tremors that don't make painting let alone sculpting easy.

pm me if you need any help

What's an "art degree?"

Seriously though, I understand art classes can be good. I wish I had taken some.

The first thing, I think, is the nuts and bolts. Learning how the physical paint works. How to manipulate it, how malleable it can get, how fragile and transatory it can be. Then it's a matter of observation and something else. The "artist's eye," if you will. Using the facial-recognition software in your brain to see shapes and patterns. It's this facial-recognition software that allows us to see sail boats when we look at clouds or Jesus when we look at burnt toast or a piece of art when we look at a lump of clay. Observation is important. It's color and light not paint-by-number. At the risk of sounding beat-nik, meditation helps. Lastly, it's putting it all together and that comes by doing. And doing and doing and doing. And then doing. Always moving forward.

Hello! I'm starting work on a custom project, and I wanted to ask a couple of fairly specific questions. I'm relatively new to the 1/6 scale world, so any help at all would be most appreciated!

I'm wondering where / if / how it easy it would be to obtain the following:

A slighty short body... more along the 5'8" height range than 6'.

A pair of black trousers.

A pair of heavy black work shoes.

I know there's an enormous community of customisers, tailors, companies, and pretty much anything anyone could hope for out there... I just don't quite know how to find them!

Thanks in advance, and nice to meet everyone! :)

-Andy

Hmmm...is someone maybe making a custom Master?

Hi all, I am a newbie so forgive me if the answer to this question is obvious.

I am just getting into the art of customizing 1:6 figures, and mainly have been honing my skills on some Barbies (which are pretty much 1:6 scale as well.) I have done a few custom pieces based off of DC characters and was wondering if such creations are welcome to be posted here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Hey all,

This has been a very informative (though long :)) thread. Great stuff. It's answered a lot of my questions, but I still have a few.

First, what are some of the best resources for getting bodies to use? And what are people's general preferences? The BBI bodies look good, but haven't seen them around much for sale.

Thanks again!

Depending on cost, I would like to try my hand at sculpting. I have very little experience in it, but I've been pleased with all of my work I've done this far. I've sculpted in kneadatite epoxy (more commonly known as "green stuff") but was wondering what sorts of material you all use.

Do you use polymer clays? Anyone use anything similar to kneadatite that doesn't involve an oven? And if so, does your stuff dry up from storage?

Thanks!

I have a Sauron statue with the horns (the taller ones) broken off or split. Wires show through in places, a factory defect I believe. I am looking for someone who could professionally repair it. It seems a shame to toss it as the rest of the statue is mint, but it bothers me every time I see it. If anyone out there can seriously help me with this or point me in the right direction, just let me know how and how much. Thanks. :ogat

Hey all,

Looking to make a custom Jimmy Gordon (the kid, not the father) figure for a friend of mine. I would LIKE to make it to movie-spec, as I'm going to be working on a custom Jim for him, too, but I need some advice.

What are the chances I'd be able to find a truetype-like body for a kid?

Am I better off just finding a kid's action figure and modifying that, instead?

Thanks for your help,
Vega

I sculpted my own Vader Dome and would like to know whether I should use gloss or semi-gloss paint on it? Thank you, guys.

Lets see some Pics!

Oh no, not untill it's finished and painted. I ran out of paint and money, so it'll be a couple of weeks. :rotfl

I still need an answer on whether I should use gloss or semi gloss. I'm thinking semi. Also whether there is a gloss coating to put on after paint or an actual black paint that is glossy. I just don't know. :(
