I like both, I enjoyed the Nolan Batman series, which, despite some of the grand wide shots with the camera, were really more character-centric and small in scale compared to MCU, but that's nice to have sometimes, and I consider Batman more that sort of story. I feel like Marvel's characters just lend themselves better to the types of movies we get out of MCU, I can't fathom a Batman movie with the type of spectacle of an Avengers film.

Went last night and it was packed! I got purchased one of the last seats (reserved seating) and it was a half hour before the movie started! And it was a Monday evening (6pm)!

Anyway, I enjoyed it thoroughly EXCEPT for the whole beginning Hydra fort sequence! It all felt rushed and cheap and tacked on with poorly written dialogue. I was really afraid the rest of the movie was going to follow suit and it would be a huge disappointment to me. But luckily the ship straightened by the time they arrived back at Tony’s building. Thor’s dialogue felt very awkward, especially in the beginning of the movie, like they didn’t quite know how to write for him, or Helmsworth wasn’t really into it and just prattled off his lines. But he was fine later on. And yes I did miss the heroic Hulk from the first Avengers. He was fine in this, but he was just so fantastic in the first one that it was a shame that they didn’t give him the same kind of spotlight again. I also thought QS was wasted a bit, especially because of how he ended up. I definitely liked the character better in DOFP, though. Hands down. I just didn’t think his character was fleshed out enough in AOU, and he needed fleshing out since he didn’t get the spectacular showcase the character did in DOFP.

I thought the creation of the Vision was great. I’m so glad Bettany finally got a chance to be in the spotlight. I always thought it was a waste that such a great actor was relegated to doing a voice-over and I’m glad that investment paid off for him! I LOL’d when he was first created and he started dressing himself, and seeing Thor’s cape made him make a cape for himself! It’s like he was thinking, “Nice cape! I want one!” However I didn’t like that the cape was CGI.

I thought Tony’s actions were well justified considering his vision, but I think that all could have been conveyed a little better, that his actions were all driven because of it. He mentioned it to Fury, but I think it could have been reiterated earlier and again later, just to show how deeply that vision specifically had affected him. It would have helped the team understand where he was coming from.

I liked Ultron as well. I could see Spader in Ultron’s body movements. I liked his idea of creating a meteor and lifting the land mass, and it reminded me of that brilliant Fantastic Four issue where Terrax lifts the entire island of Manhattan and all the other heroes come out to save the civilians. See? It happens in the comics too! And that was way back in the early 80s! I always hoped a Fantastic Four movie would use that, but now it’s too late since AOU stole that thunder!

Overall I would place it slightly below the original because I really didn’t like the whole beginning sequence.

I’d rank them:

1. Iron Man 1 10/10
2. Winter Soldier 10/10
3. Avengers 9/10
4. AOU 8/10
5. Thor 7/10
6. Incredible Hulk 7/10
7. Iron Man 3 7/10
8. GOTG 7/10
9. Iron Man 2 7/10
10. Thor: TDW 6/10
11. Cap: FA 4/10

I'm going to see AoU for the second time tonight but I definitely found it FAR better than the first Avengers. In fact, I think it will pretty much replace A1 entirely as far as repeat viewings go. I just don't know that I'll ever have a reason to watch the first one instead of the second.

I feel I should mention that I LOVE Batman Begins and TDK (huge Batman fan here too!), it's just TDKR that really bothered me greatly in retrospect.

It's like, after pulling off such a fantastic film out of Inception he just kinda flubbed around when it came to making TDKR. Didn't help that Ledger passed away, which would have definitely deflated him a bit considering how he was originally planned to be part of the sequel.

Eventually when JL rolls around they will have their spectacle to present to the world. Might even get some come BvsS, lets see.

Well thought out review. :duff

Nah, I still love the 1st one.

I love BB/TDK as well.

TDKR hands down the biggest disappointing follow up that exists in superhero cbm cinema.

Look what i'm watching this very second. :lol

Let me tell you, this photo is 100% undoctored in any way and the 2D image looks like freaking 3D!

Man I love this TV! :lol

Who doesn't love meteors, especially when they start out as a city in the sky? :yess:

Definitely understand your criticism over the introductory sequence though. Getting thrown in like that felt a bit disorienting, and I was glad when the film found its footing when the Avengers Tower stuff kicked in.

The only thing about that whole raise the city and drop it back on earth thing is wouldn't countries with missle loaded or nuclear loaded jets just blow it out of the sky before it fell?

I loved the opening scene ... sort of like just jumping right into the 3rd act of Avengers 1. Enjoy seeing them work as a united front.

Didn't think they actually had the luxury or time to react fast enough to that. SHIELD was practically dead in the film (until Fury came in) and the Avengers essentially acted as the world's primary defender against major threats during that time. The fact that Stark even decided on the creation of the Ultron program is indicative of this.

I'm ok with the fast jump into action, please, I don't want to see Peter Parker become Spiderman again. :lol

Oh lawdy, no more Peter Parker origins for me. I love Spidey but how many times do they really have to start with the origin?! :slap

Well, I didn't mind the intro myself, but I can only guess that average viewers probably didn't know wtf was going on or why Hydra was suddenly involved. :rotfl

The reason they jumped straight into the action in the opening scene is because they literally set the opening up from the ending of the prior Agents of SHIELD episode. XD

On the topic of Thor's lines feeling out of place: when he is first seen armored up after destroying Ultron Mark I, he says something like "Trail went cold...." Just didn't sound like something Thor would say at all.
