Re: Avengers: Endgame (April 26th, 2019)
What did you not like about IW? There are a few things I'd change but overall I was satisfied with it. Events didn't play out like I had imagined, but the end result was what I had hoped for. The Avengers defeated with Thanos victorious. I'm actually not that hyped for the post-IW MCU at all.
The main problem I had was Cap seemed way underpowered, he should have defeated at least one Black Order member in Wakanda.
The short answer is "I wanted an IW movie like CW/TWS and got Guardians instead."
The rest of this is longwinded (sorry) but wanted to be specific - not just hating for sake of it.....
Tough to answer 'coz it's tough to explain why a script - just the way even a few short words are put together - grabs me or doesnt.
1) But, OK, that's one thing. I didn't like a lot Gunn's writing in GOGT2 - I dunno, found it kind of dull or flat. As opposed to Markus and McFeely's TWS and CW writing, and in IW think it showed up again. Like the interchanges between Vision and SW I thought were compelling and held my interest, where halfway through Gamora's speech to Thanos I completely lost interest. Even now I think that should have been cut in half. Drags on so long it's like a soap opera, to me.
There was other stuff too, like the line "the noblest end in history". It's just a boring, over-used line. Gunn wrote the Guardians lines in IW; IMO Gunn to me isn't real great with drama. Or like when Gamora heaves the bowl away. IMO it's just dull, over-used kinds of stuff, that IMO never showed up in a Russo film before.
Overall I think the mix of writers in IW was a problem. The Russos made it work, and there was stuff I thought was funny (Drax re Thor
) but there was - for me - too much fake Shakespeare.
2) Like pounding into my head how bad Thanos is
. There's 2 scenes where we learn how bad Thanos is (the long ones with Gamora and then talking to DS) plus Banner and others talk about how bad he is. Even after all that, we really don't know his motivations, really. Not like Hela, Loki, Zemo, Bucky, or Ultron.
3) The IMO sidelining of Team Cap, any real exchange between established relationships - IMO cheapened the earlier films. Also the sense that DS, Guardians, and Spiderman were being heavily featured re upcoming films. That was jarring for me, esp. when there had just been a GOTG, Spiderman, and Thor movie - so why am I seeing so much of these characters, again?
4) I like grittier, hand to hand Earth-based battles. Really was looking forward to the Wakanda battle, esp. after the T'challa trailer. As in *head explodes
* looking forward to it. Wakanda! Wakanda fighters!
U have some of the MCU's best fighters on hand - Cap, T'challa, Bucky, Hulk, BW - there was some stuff, sure, but IMO not nearly enough. Not enough build-up, and seemed more like a frame for Thor to show up. Felt rushed.
5) Too much humor. The IW I wanted was Thanos-crunches-over-the-bones IW
. Like the battles in Braveheart/LOTR. Too much rushing. Because there was no emotional lead-in to the Wakanda battle, I didn't feel much when folks started dropping, either. Because of all the jokes, I couldn't "sink" into the film. Or I got irritated, like the Hulk thing which had no explanation whatsoever as to why Hulk is suddenly pouting. Wasn't IMO funny, more like WTF. (Also, IMO the music was "boring headache-causing epic" except the last scenes w. the sort of quiet thunder
)
I know a lot of people love IW. There's stuff I appreciate. But re other stuff got pretty frustrated with after getting SO hyped
. Like make "whole day about IW premiere" hype. After all, the Russos were directing, my favs. Feeling pretty wary of EG, too, esp. stuffing CM into it.
But I don't HATE IW. Overall I'd give it a 6/10, but don't think it is one of the MCU's best.
Tho I blame Marvel/Disney for that, too, with the film release schedule; there was that pressure as well to get the film out.
