While Arkham Knight has its faults I still find t to competent and well designed. The story isn’t the best in the series but then the first two games were written by Paul Dini who has more than just a little intimate knowledge of our dear Dark Knight. I do like that they gave the Jason Todd, “Death in the Family”, story their own spin as these games are their own canon and do not exactly follow the comics or the animated series. That said, it was predictable and was called early only to have rocksteady lie and say it was a new character because, hey, who’s gonna say, “yeah, you got us”. I did find some parts of the story a little off putting, as someone else said, an army basically invaded Gotham and the only people to give a crap is Batman and the GCPD, that’s a bit far-fetched even for Comics, of course the city is basically abandoned but I have time believing the State and Federal Governments would just let someone invade a city. I also see a lot of people complaining about the Knightfall protocol, however this has been hinted at in the comics, as a contingency, and the Animated Series Episode “Over the Edge” as something Batman is prepared to do. He’s full prepared to sacrifice his personal Identity as Bruce Wayne to continue the mission. No one said Bruce is dead, but he has left that identity behind. Now, for those that got the full ending, you’ll see a new Batman, who that could be is pretty much left up to the player to decide. It could be Azrael, as the one side mission would have you believe, it could still be Bruce, however with the Knightfall name I’m inclined to believe the former, which also leaves this open for either Rocksteady to return to Batman in the future, or allow someone else to continue the story and even allows for a return of Bruce Wayne if the new Batman is indeed someone else, much like the original Knightfall story.
The Batmobile, was there a lot of it? Absolutely and I expected it. Some think it took away from the game play, I on the other hand like it as a new edition and was glad to get to use it so much. After all, as we mentioned before, it’s an invading army, believable or not there’s no way Bruce can combat such a force without this vehicle. I also think the side missions, Bank robberies, Arkham Bases, Man Bat story, and others, give you plenty of the game play from the games previous to this one. So I’m not going to complain that the main story used the Batmobile too much.
Overall the design of the city itself is gorgeous. It’s a stunning world and I’m glad we finally got a full Gotham to play through. The fighting feels good, just as it has in the past and the gadgets work perfectly.
So with all that said, if this is indeed the final foray into the world of Arkham then I’m fine with that. But I have no doubt that this isn’t the last Batman game we’ll see. I imagine either a new series of games is on its way, or some sort of continuation, although I really hope if that’s the case it’s handled with as much care and passion as these games were.
