You can leave the middle piece out, but the problem would the back (since it comes in two pieces, one to attach to each cubby). In the above case, there is no back, so there doesn't need to be a middle piece on the front unit.

^^^ Wait, I'm a bit confused, but I think I have a general idea of what you're talking about. Do you by chance have a picture of the BESTAs with the doors open? Is the middle section on the front taken out? The reflections are getting in the way. I want to see if I can angle the Tumbler 45 degrees or less or whatever so that I can display more than just the front of it, if you know what I mean. That way, I can put a Batman figure next to it as well to showcase. I'm not sure if that middle section being taken out would cause instability. I see that you used a mirrored top to join the two. Is that stable enough or would you need a frame on the bottom too?

Would putting 3x1 shelves on top of this shelf extension unit be too much weight on this base? I want to raise my BESTAs a little higher off the ground so I could see the bottom row more, but I'm debating whether to get the steel frame and boost it up 4" or if this extension unit would work and I can get a good 15" raise.

IMO, no problem. That extension is just as strong as any other Besta unit. Securely attach everything together and also to the wall.

Thanks for the quick reply, Pixel! I'm not sure if I can attach them to the wall since it's not a strongest/sturdiest wall, but I would probably be careful not to run into it or anything. On one pairing, I was going to have the Tumbler, DeLorean (eventually), Bat (possibly) and maybe another vehicle so I was just wondering whether that would hold or if the steel frame would be the better choice. Is there a way to securely attach just the extension to the 3x1 over it?

The Bestas are plenty strong enough for those Hot Toys things.

Don't all Besta units and extension include clips that link multiple pieces together? Otherwise, just drive some screws up from the under side of the top of the extension unit into the bottom of what you put on top of it.

Go in the store and stand on one, get your wife/GF to join you if it takes that you're good.
I saw a tabel in there that looked a bit flimsy, stood on it and decided it wasn't for me when it nearly broke :lol

There's an offer from the 3rd here and I'm going for Glassvik, you've got me thinking now. Never been happy with how the bottom row displays.

DO IT.

IKEA rates horizontal surfaces and if you want assurances, each SHELF is recommended for use up to 66 lbs (there are two shelves in that unit, plus the top). But putting another Besta on top doesn't put stress on the shelves (or top) it's all going to be on the vertical parts which are all also quite solid - the same things that support the 3x1 shelf itself. Totally fine as far as weight goes. The most important thing is making sure the pieces are joined together well and the whole new tall structure isn't tippy at all.

That extension unit, covered with doors especially, will look stellar lifting up other Besta shelves.

I'll check and ask them when I stop by later today. Thanks!

Yep, that's one of my main concerns as well. Don't want the top ones shifting and/or falling off the extensions if there's an earthquake or aftershock or something.

I'm confident it will, but it would be nice to place them over top of the vertical parts of the unit.

Turns out there should be a clamp that comes with the extensions to secure the extension unit with the shelf on top of it. :wink1:

They also have tons of those clamps in the loose bin section. I bought some units off of craigslist and I needed some. Ask the guy at the service desk, he just gave them to me

Good to know, thanks mate! :hi5: an extra one or two will help in keeping it even more secure.
