Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

Most who see my collection are in awe and some just understand its my hobby. No differnt if we were to have sports stuff everywhere or what ever. Collect what you love and could care less what others think. I almost love admire figures as much as the movie's when i watch. A fun display can take you to a favorite scene from a movie or favorite memory from growing up with the toys you might have owned. That's why i love this hobby it make's movie's come back to life and forever live on for me.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

I never force my collection on anyone that comes to my house, but when people do eventually see it their reaction is usually positive.

:exactly:

I never intentionally usher anyone in that direction, but people seem to find their way in that direction on their own and start asking about them, stating how cool they are.

:goodpost:

The four biggies for me growing up were Christopher Reeve Superman, Star Wars, Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. Now with Blitzway producing these Ghostbusters figures, my childhood is complete. I have high end figures from each.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

I don't give a damn what others think about my toys either. And I sure as hell don't buy them to impress. Upon sight of my collection which is quarantined to my theater room close to half recoil or give me a strange look, others I can tell just pretend to be polite. A high percentage of people on the outside view this hobby as a huge sign of immaturity, but I don't care. It's my damn money.

The line of attack I usually hear from people outside the hobby is something like, "you buy dolls?", with "dolls" having a negative connotation associated with childhood and immaturity (and perhaps with a hint of sexism, assuming only young adolescent girls collect "dolls"). Collecting dolls may be viewed as a sign of immaturity, but that's a silly argument. If anything, being able to afford something like the 4-pack Ghostbusters is a sign of responsibility because I'm successful enough to have the disposable income to buy them. That and there's enough seriousness in daily life that everyone needs an escape.

And while I do buy figures that I like for my own enjoyment and do not require the validation of others, it's nice to share them, too. I have at least one figure on my desk at work at a time and change it out occasionally, but most of my coworkers just ignore whatever is on display and say nothing (strangely, a lot of people seemed to notice HT Black Widow). I must admit that sometimes I steer attention/conversation to the figure on my desk, but that's only because I'm excited about my collection and I don't know anyone else IRL who collects them and shares my excitement.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

The ones that are most happy in adulthood are the ones that never let the child inside them die. For whatever reason, I've noticed this generally more often tends to be males rather than females.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

Just recently I've been surprised that people I've known as customers for years also like sixth scale. Generally it's in a much smaller way, and the figures in question are DML military they pick up second hand (like the load I sold recently from my own collection).

The age range of these buyers is from the forties to the seventies. Guys who I knew collected die cast vehicles, but not action figures. There are a lot of 'mature' people out there who are still living out their childhood, and it's nice to see, and to talk them about it.

It's still a niche hobby, but it's gotten a lot bigger over time and maybe even starting to reach a saturation point among likely consumers. There was a time, not long ago, when I was considering shifting to custom figures only because manufacturers seemed to be hitting on the same licenses over and over again. But this year a lot of undeveloped licenses were announced (Ghostbusters, Conan, Jurassic Park, Star Trek, The Thing, Princess Bride, James Bond, etc.) and I'm now considering passing on customs altogether because it's much more likely that offbeat IPs will get licensed and we'll see figures. That and smaller developers are coming out of the woodwork to fill in the gaps. It goes to show that--mature or not--a lot of people are buying.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

Totally agree. I'm sure I'll still pick up a custom here and there, if it's something I know will never get produced, but companies are for sure taking more risks now which is great. It's an exciting time for the hobby.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

Every January I tell myself that this will be the year that I downsize my figure spending, but that never works out and it certainly won't after the flood of announcements this year.

Yeah it's kind of funny to think I pay more and take better care of my "dolls" than my sister ever did with hers as a kid. :D

And I admit I do find it frustrating at times that my family and friends don't seem to recognize or care that these figures are a whole lot more detailed and sophisticated than the typical Barbie Doll or GI Joe. In the end all they seem to see is just a plastic figure wearing a cloth outfit. Lol

Yeah same here. After seeing how much I spent last year I told myself I really needed to cut back, but then I got a new, higher paying job and my buying has suddenly gotten a whole lot worse. Lol. Whether it's all the tempting preorders we're seeing these days or suddenly deciding there's an older figure I need to track down and buy, I just can't seem to resist these things.

Although I suppose there are worse addictions to have. :)

Don't sweat it. That's why there are forums like this.

My mom used to collect Madame Alexander dolls, so she always likes to see my figures (while at the same time worrying about how much I spend on them and how much space they take up). I even bought her a Hot Toys Jack Sparrow because she loved mine so much. The rest of my family appreciates that my collection makes me happy and they indulge me in conversation about it once in a while and that's enough for me. If they don't understand that it's more than just plastic and cloth, then that's fine.

The best thing I have accomplished is to stop the knee-jerk, day-one preorders. I wait before ordering now and sometimes my desire will go away. Waiting before ordering gives me time to think about whether a figure is important to me or not (e.g., do I like this character enough or is he/she/it important enough to spend a few hundred dollars on or is there another character that's more important?). Lately, real life expenditures have taken precedence (that maturity thing), so I'm trying to cut back more, but dammit, all these new figures are making it difficult.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

I can identify with y'all. I also have slowed down significantly. I went up to the attic for something, and was struck by how long it has been since my last trip up there. In peak collecting times, I would go up at least once every couple of weeks to put up boxes for new toys (usually much more often). And I got a HT Darth Vader well over a month ago and still haven't opened him up, which reflects a lack of passion. I actually would sell a lot more of my stuff if I were even motivated to do that. But I don't need to to keep buying the stuff I want. And it's such a slog taking pics, listing on eBay, dealing with the highway robbery of fees, potentially dealing with moron buyers, etc. But at this point, there isn't all that much that I'm really motivated to buy. I am mostly out of the custom arena. Ghostbusters is a no brainer since it's probably my favorite film, and this is them being treated right. Back to the Future is the same. And core films that I love like Raiders, Star Wars, etc. I'll always be open to, even though most of those bases are covered at this point. But all the comic book stuff? Walking Dead and Game of Thrones (even though I love the shows)? The passion isn't there. And I don't care at all for the flashy new stuff that I know I'll have no strong connection to a year or two down the road, like the newer Star Wars movies.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

I collect solely to impress and scare others.

Some I hope will be insanely jealous at my vast fortunes that allow me to spend thousands of dollars on my dollies.

In others, I hope to inspire fear when they see a 40 something obsessing over over sized action figures and they way in which I care for them.....and keep them under my total control.

The rest , I hope they will be or (know) a hot female turned on by my obvious wealth and good taste who will throw herself a me and become my slave Leia.

What other possible reason could one collect???????
My acquisitions this year will be on display to every single person who visits.....none shall be allowed in my domicile whom do not worship myself and my collection.

Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1

For all that's seen my collection, the worst thing I've been told is, "You know even if you're not into these characters or you're not into this hobby, you still have to appreciate the level of detail that goes into these."

For a variety of reasons, the responsibilities of adulthood come faster for females than males.

One can still take on the responsibilities of adulthood while having a passion or hobby that they dedicate to themselves. Some people feel that being an "adult" means that you have to foresake everything you ever liked before and find a new set of interests.

I'm certain there are a myriad of individuals who collect these figures that are more mature, intelligent, responsible and adult like than people who don't collect these figures. As others have mentioned, the ones who are able to comfortably afford these in the first place should actually speak volumes.

I like your transparency over the matter.

Of course one CAN take on the responsibilities of adulthood while having a passionate hobby. It's just much less probable for women than for men because significant life events can and do effect women much more frequently and differently than men. Consequently, the two genders are not similarly situated.

The most obvious example is getting pregnant- something a man never has to even contemplate. And unfortunately, the burdens of child bearing and raising are often (not always) solely borne by the mother.

For a 23 yo single woman with a child, PO'ing Ecto-1, or collecting figurines, or vintage Barbies is not likely unless she's swimming in disposable cash (which is not likely for ANY 23 yo, much less one raising a child on her own). And because child care occurs over decades, it's likely that future financial resources will be devoted to the child, not the hobby. Getting pregnant is an adult life event that only women face. Typically (not always), women bear the risk of the adult life event of raising a child alone. I would also venture to guess that women overwhelmingly comprise the vast pool of single parents. And unfortunately, it is not uncommon for women to raise a child without significant (or any) help from the father. Raising a child alone tends to extinguish the burning embers of collecting or whatever hobby may have existed.

In this example, adulthood has come knocking and debating the release of the Hulkbuster probably isn't on her radar anymore.

So, CAN she still avidly collect baseball cards or Mickey Mouse stuff? Sure. Is it probable? It's remote in the extreme.

This is one example. There are others.
