Re: Blitzway - 1/6 Scale Ghostbusters - Collectible Figures and ECTO-1
Funny, until this thread I never considered that anyone would think less of Winston than the others. I actually always thought he was the most important one story wise due to the others over the top personalities. Egon is the over the top socially awkward scientist with no scense of humor. Ray is the obsessed childlike paranormal expert, Venkman is the comic relief, Winston was us. The everyman, the one who we the viewer could identify with in the crazy paranormal world of the Ghostbusters.
I believe that he was the catalyst for a pivotal scene in the film as far as tone shift:
Following this scene, it seemed like the tone in the film shifted and got a bit more serious and not as humorous as the first half of the film when it focused more on the three scientists' eccentric individual personalities. Scenes like this made me want to add him to my collection.
I initially started out with the 3-pack, but GB is one of my favorite films and I don't see a company making an entire set of GBII figures (nor would I be interested in getting an entire set of GBII even if they did [SB Ray and Winston would likely be the only ones]), so having the entire team from GB makes sense in that case since there likely won't be another opportunity to have a complete team. Plus, I liked Winston's look better in the first film personally.
However, I think there are indeed several valid reasons why people would only get the three scientists and not Winston, which nobody has to justify to anyone else. He was part of the team, sure, but for 50% of the film, he wasn't. So having the three scientists would still be accurate. Perhaps someone simply wants to recreate the Sedgewick Hotel bust with Slimer and obviously, Winston wasn't a part of that.
Perhaps people also aren't interested in spending close to $900, but still want to at least have some semblance of a full team that's still accurate to the film. Obviously, Winston would again be the odd man out here and though still expensive, the 3-pack is a bit more price friendly than the 4-pack, while still being accurate to what consisted of their team at a point in the film.
I personally think it's a bit ridiculous for anyone to accuse anyone else (not that it's happening in this case, but sadly, it actually did happen in earlier stages of this thread) of not spending $224 for his 1/6 scale figure simply because they must hate an entire group of people merely based on the melanin content of their skin. That to me seems like it would be at the bottom of the list of reasons, just as Ernie himself even stated regarding his truncated role in the film. If today's favorite "R" word was truly the case, he wouldn't have even been in the film to begin with, in any capacity.
Many people got the 4-pack, many got the 3-pack, and some only got one or two. Bottom line, get who you want and what you want.
