Not to pick on anyone, because I feel the same way as everyone else about Star Wars, but I just thought that quote was so funny, like Star Wars is really real. But then to we the fans, I guess it might as well be, eh? Now where's my lightsaber???
Being serious now, there is some bad EU stuff and there is some good EU stuff, personally I like all the books in some way or another if for no other reason than it allows me to again slip into that galaxy far far away. I didn't care for any of the clone wars novels with the exception of Yodaark Rendezvous and the MedStar books. Oh, the Republic Commando book I liked as well, gonna read the sequel soon. Truce at Bakura was good and I really enjoyed Tattooine ghost which kinda bridges PT and OT by Han and Leia going to Tattooine and learning about Anakin while searching for a painting. This is going a bit long, so I'll just leave off recomending that if you are interested in the EU go to a bookstore and browse or check Amazon and read some reviews (which may have unwarned spoilers).
