Whether or not the "disappointment" or the "hate" is warranted doesn't really matter. That fact of the matter is that it's there, it's growing, and it certainly didn't appear out of nowhere. A number of things happened over the years which seemed to really turn off a faction of the fanbase. There were numerous opportunities for BD to turn things around too.
In virtually every case, it appeared as if it chose to prioritize its own bottom line over its long term rep. While that isn't illegal, it's definitely not going to win anyone any popularity contests nor is it going to inspire much product loyalty. Sadly, it's more likely going to invite further derision and ridicule. At least in part, that might explain why we're seeing more statues and busts with edition runs in the mid three digits, as well a generally poor secondary market place.
I'd like to think that BD could turn things around and once again be the major player it once was. However, that would certainly require a change in management and company mandate. Sadly, some owners seem destined to go down with the ship as opposed to reaching out for help or admitting that they might not know everything.
All this to say that I don't think the fanbase suddenly went broke. They're just taking their money somewhere else.
That, my dear friends, is how people best express their "disappointment".
